A&M adds former Youngstown State LB Alex Howard via transfer portal

From a Penguin to an Aggie.

Texas A&M has landed a commitment out of the transfer portal from linebacker Alex Howard.

He comes to College Station after playing four years at Youngstown State. A product of Mount Healthy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Howard is the third addition out of the portal for the Aggies.

He arrived at Youngstown State ahead of the 2020 COVID-19 season, where he appeared in five games. He only had 10 tackles in that campaign, but his production has steadily increased over the course of his career.

In total, Howard has tallied 142 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and five sacks as a college player. He also has one interception as well as a kick return that went for 21 yards during the 2022 season.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder has one year of eligibility remaining, and Howard chose the Aggies over South Carolina, Michigan State, Virginia Tech and a number of others.

It's a good pickup. His offer list is from a tier of programs we hope to permanently eclipse. Some would argue we have already gone ahead of SCe, VTech, and Michigan State. Certainly our recruiting statistics have been much better than those schools in recent years.

Youngstown State, not Power 5. Look instead at what Kiffin is doing. Creates unease with new staff.

I'm trusting Elko until proven otherwise. He did a great job here as DC, and a great job at Duke as HC. Dude knows how to evaluate what he needs.

Portal schools are inconsistent. Kiffin's teams will look like world beaters one week then get hammered by Directional U the next, then go on a five game losing streak.

The portal is a depth and finishing tool, not something you want to use to build the core of a team. Kiffin isn't a genius, he's desperate cause Ole Miss just can't pull the high school talent A&M can.

We've got guys transferring to other power programs in the sec and we are replacing them with kids from old dominion and Youngstown state

What school or league the transfers come from is irrelevant.
What is relevant is this player a playmaker.
I'm going to assume that Coach Elko has looked at the tapes of prospective transfers and he and his staff have made an evaluation based on their playmaking ability.
One thing is for certain, no one on this board is capable of evaluating talent better than Elko and his staff.
Let's give the man a chance to prove what he can do.

Even Jimbo didn't have his complete staff hired until sometime in January. Have a little patience it'll get done. And have you thought that the DC might be coaching in one of the bowl games and isn't available or wants to finish out the year with his current team.

You conveniently left off the DB from K St. and the biggest thing is they aren't freshman and can probably play right away.
