QB1: Conner Weigman named A&M's starter ahead of season opener

Sophomore Conner Weigman has won Texas A&M’s starting quarterback competition coach Jimbo Fisher announced on Monday.

A five-star rated prospect in A&M’s celebrated 2022 recruiting class, Weigman won an intense competition with junior Max Johnson for the starting job.

According to reports from TexAgs’ Billy Liucci, Weigman had a strong showing in a scrimmage over a week ago, reportedly throwing six touchdowns and routinely moving the offense up and down the field with accurate passing.

When the Aggies open the football season on Saturday against New Mexico at Kyle Field, Weigman will be the third player in Fisher’s six-year tenure at A&M to begin the season as the starter.

Kellen Mond won a competition with Nick Starkel to start in 2018. He started the ’18, ’19 and ’20 seasons.

Haynes King won quarterback competitions over Zach Calzada in 2021 and Johnson last year.

Weigman was a highly-coveted recruit in the class of 2022 out of Bridgeland HS.

However, injuries and erratic play forced King to the sidelines in both seasons.

Johnson, who last year transferred to A&M from LSU,  actually replaced King as the starter last season, taking over in the third game and leading the Aggies to a 17-9 victory over Miami. The next week, he started a 23-21 victory over Arkansas.

But Johnson sustained a season-ending injury the following week in a 42-24 loss to Mississippi State and finished last season completing 60.6 percent of his passes for 517 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for 58 yards.

Johnson was replaced by King, who then started in losses to Alabama and South Carolina.

Weigman got his first chance to start on Oct. 29 against Ole Miss. Though the Aggies lost, 31-28, Weigman completed 28 of 44 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns.

He started three more games, including a season-ending 38-23 upset of LSU. In that game, Weigman completed 12 of 18 passes for 155 yards and threw touchdown passes to Donovan Green and Moose Muhammad. He also rushed for 21 yards.

Overall, Weigman had an impressive showing as a true freshman. He passed for 896 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions, running for 97 additional yards.

Most SEC teams end up starting 2 different QB's in a season. Hope Petrino works in some PT for Max Johnson to keep him sharp and ready.

In my perfect world. Wig throws for 4-5 tds in first half. Then Max goes in second half. Same with o line. I hope we see 5-8 guys get significant playing time. Dl too , play ten of them.

There will probably be a dedicated period in practice at some point in the week where Max gets some reps with the 1s. That said, you have to prepare with QB1 as much as possible and then adjust if he goes down. Keep QB2 ready, but not to the point that it takes important reps from QB1.

We should be fine as long as the o-line protects him and he stays healthy
