Notes from John Scheschuk interview

* He has no emotions about leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. Looking through the RPI rankings of the SEC, it’s obvious who the stronger league is. It could be argued that the SEC is even stronger, pound for pound, than it is on the football field which can be hard to believe. Some of the Big 12 rivalry games will be missed, but the competition and new rivalries that will form will trump those of old. The tournament that is held in Birmingham, Alabama each year is always a big event and A&M should really enjoying playing in it in the future.

* A great recipe for success in this tournament would be beating Texas in your pod and then stomping Baylor in the championship on your way out the door. He doesn’t think that the coaching staff or the players will miss the Big 12, but winning this tournament would be a great way to go out.

* He loved playing the tournament while he was in school. The Bricktown area is great and it gave a great feel to the tournament as a whole. One thing that was always disappointing to him was the overall fan support, not from A&M however. If you were playing Oklahoma or Oklahoma State, the house would be packed, but if an Oklahoma team wasn’t on the field, the fans didn’t really come out. Nonetheless, that ballpark is a great place to play.

* The SEC tournament will have so many more fans in the stands, for all of the games, than the Big 12 Tournament. The Big 12 Tournament has always been run very well, but from a support perspective it doesn’t compare to the SEC. There is a culture of baseball in the SEC that goes back about 30 years and has never really ended. They have built ballparks and their tournament has recorded a great history throughout the years.

* Playing so well as of late is huge for A&M. Coach Childress has a track record of getting his teams to play well later in the season and its happening again this year. He isn’t sure if this team is good enough to win a national title, but they will for sure be a tough out for some team. He will be extremely disappointed if this team doesn’t make it to Omaha because that should be the absolute low bar with this team. If they can get back to the College World Series, they will have a shot due to the experience gained last year. Everything seems to be coming together right now for A&M which is nothing but a good sign.

* This team has a lot to play for this week in Oklahoma City. A month ago, he had no doubt that A&M was not going to get a national seed, but they have since squashed that. They will for sure host a regional and playing well this week would be a big step into the possibility of hosting a super. You can’t trick a full baseball season and this team has remained in the top-15 all year, so they are what they are. There is a reason they have been ranked highly all year, and that hasn’t changed since the first day of the season. If they can go out and win this tournament this weekend, then by all means, they should end up with a top-eight seed.
