Former Texas A&M safety Antonio Johnson was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. "AJ" joined TexAgs Radio on Friday morning to detail life since his departure from College Station and his thoughts on the Aggies this fall.

Key notes from Antonio Johnson interview

  • Life is good. We are on day three of training camp. I am making plays with the team.

  • The adjustment to the NFL has been good. It's easier coming from the SEC. Off the field, it's just knowing how to prepare for practice.

  • Being taken later in the draft put a chip on my shoulder, but that's in the past. Once you get here, everyone is in the league. I want to prove myself to everybody. I was blessed with an opportunity to hear the Jaguars call my name.

  • I am very versatile and aggressive downhill. I will be playing safety. I love that they will use me in different places, like in college.

  • We will get pads on in a couple of days. It will get real. Everybody knows I can hit. I have been working on man coverage. I want to show I can do everything to make myself more valuable.

  • As a safety, you are the voice of the defense, making calls and checks. That isn't foreign to me because I did it in college. The hardest thing is being able to digest everything they throw at you and have good study habits.

  • The fans are amazing in Jacksonville. We just got a new facility. Everyone in the locker room wants to win the Super Bowl.

  • You know when Trevor Lawrence comes into the room. He is a great leader. Everyone respects him. The offensive side will be very powerful.

  • I will play against Devon Achane, Jaylon Jones and Isaiah Spiller this year. There are a lot of guys in the league I played with.

  • The head coach makes it known that special teams are important. As a rookie, you have to make plays. You have to take every aspect of the game seriously.

  • All the veterans have been very welcoming. They will answer any questions I have. We have a young team. It's easy to talk to everybody.

  • I feel like Texas A&M has a great chance of winning the national championship this year. Offensively, we have great quarterbacks and great leaders. Defensively, those boys will hold it down, for sure. I have been talking to them. They said they are ready. I can’t wait to see them go do their thing.

  • Jimbo Fisher is close with his players. On the field, he will be hard on you, but off the field, he is very welcoming. A lot of people don’t get to see that side of him.

  • They’re now in year two of D.J. Durkin’s defense. We had to adjust last year. They will make plays this year. They have the right guys in the right positions.
