R.C. Slocum remembers the late Terry Price as 'an exceptional man'

Former Texas A&M football coach R.C. Slocum had the privilege of recruiting, coaching and watching Terry Price mold into the beloved man he was. On Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio, Slocum shared his favorite memories of Price following his passing at age 55.

Key notes from R.C Slocum interview

  • The championships are fun and meaningful, but one of the real joys of coaching is seeing guys mature and become good men. I could not be more proud of Terry Price. He was an exceptional man and a great young man. He was a classy guy. He played for us early and played well. He went to the NFL and came back and said he wanted to be a coach. I offered him a grad assistant position to let him get started. Tommy Tuberville was on my staff as defensive coordinator. He was very impressed. Tommy got the Ole Miss job, took Terry and then took Terry with him to Auburn.

  • It's a huge loss. That's not supposed to happen. It's a sad thing. I got a chance to go see Terry in the hospital last week. He couldn't really talk, but he was rolling his eyes and communicating the best he could. It was a special meeting for me, and I'm sure for him too.

  • Price was at Plano High School. His high school coach and dad came up with rules, and one of those rules was no phone calls. You used to call recruits every week. One call per recruit per week. His dad and coach said anyone that violated the call rule would be crossed off the list. I watched him, but I couldn't call him. After the season, they would allow schools to come in and make their pitch. The family would be in communication and tell us when they would visit campus. He is one of the better players I have ever recruited. He visited and said they would let us know what he decides. He decided on Texas A&M.

  • I'm doing really well. I feel great. Not taking any medicine. I went to MD Anderson and did testing, and everything is all clear. I've gained all the weight back that I've lost. I'm playing golf. I have after-effects of the chemotherapy. I can move around, and I'm very thankful. It gives you an appreciation of life. I take every day as a special gift. I try to minimize the things I get upset about. Terry's passing certainly put a damper on my spirits.

  • I have seen the Dat Nguyen movie. It is so professionally done. 12th Man Productions produced it, and I've never seen one better done. His life is a great story. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Watching the story of Dat Nguyen and his life, it's an amazing story.

  • I'm always looking forward to football season. Sometimes things don't go your way. With a little bit of tweaking, I think we can be a pretty good football team.

  • I have my feeling about the Texas A&M-Texas game. I think it is one of those great, great rivalries. I coached it more than anyone in history. I coached it 30 times. Sixteen of those times, I walked off on the winning side. It was a special game, and I am glad we are playing them. I really hope it's on Thanksgiving weekend. I know there are a lot of rivalries that weekend, but there is none bigger than A&M and Texas.
