Texas A&M adds former Jackson State LB Jurriente Davis via transfer portal

Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M struck big in the transfer portal again, and this time, it’s an experienced linebacker as Jackson State graduate transfer Jurriente “JD” Davis announced his plans to transfer to College Station.

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound defender is coming off a strong 2022 season for Jackson State, where he played in all 13 games and finished third on the team with 58 tackles. He also recorded 7.5 TFLs on the season. He entered the transfer portal on March 28, and Kentucky hosted him on his first official visit in early April. He also recently received an offer from Louisville.

Davis, originally from Greensboro (NC) Dudley, began his college career at Hutchinson CC in Kansas. He spent two seasons at Hutchinson, and in a COVID-19-shortened season in the spring of 2021, he earned JUCO All-American honors before signing with Middle Tennessee State. In the fall of 2021, he finished fourth in tackles for Middle Tennessee State, recording 68 tackles, and he transferred to Jackson State for the 2022 season.

His Texas A&M commitment comes on the heels of his official visit to Texas A&M for the Aggies’ spring game the weekend of April 14. His decision brings the Texas A&M transfer class to five, and he joins cornerbacks Josh DeBerry (Boston College), Sam McCall (Florida State) and Tony Grimes (North Carolina) on the defensive side of the ball.

"Even when everybody else (has) stop (sic) believing."

Sure would like to know what he meant by that. I mean, it's obvious there's some kind of narrative out there about this program right now, and this seems to confirm that.

Glad we got a LB finally.

Seems like he is talking about himself not the team.

Yes and this is 100% obvious. Only a moron would think he's talking about our program.

Now this is good news. We seriously needed another linebacker w experience that's at least a decent player.

Rolling into a season w basically 2 guys (cooper and Russell) w experience is not a formula for defensive success bc we know injuries are coming.

Boom! Exactly what we have needed.

An experienced LB willing to come in and compete! Now we need to find at minimum one more exactly like him!

he is a linebacker who appears to have some instincts to go with talent. this could actually be a huge pickup. a great middle linebacker will clean up with this defensive line.

Very good tape. Lots of nice reads and super explosive athleticism.

6' 1 225? That's a safety. Going to need at least 15 lbs of good weight to be a serviceable mlb in the SEC. Frankly he sounds like Richard Moore with about the same measurables as a freshman. Great instincts but couldn't stay healthy with his size. But we do need bodies

Huge inside linebackers are no longer the way to go. They have to be able to cover and run with backs. We can't complain about a 1990's offense and want a 1990's defense at the same time.

No idea if this guy can play, but we really needed a veteran linebacker. Another LBer, an OT, 2 WR's, and another CB and our depth will look a lot better.

I get stripped down mlbs are more prominent now. Perk is a special athlete and will certainly weigh in the range I suggested, at least, by the time he's this young man's age. All I'm really saying is I'm worried about his size but I'm glad to have another player at the linebacker position.

When you run a 3-2/3 or 4/2 you need speedy LBs that can run. Most of the time you still have your bigger/slower guy on the short side but speed is more important than size. CJ Mosley and Devon White were only around 230 in college and tore it up

In the NFL maybe, but in college 220-235 is pretty average, particularly for coverage linebackers. Only Bama and Georgia can stack up the 240-250 monsters and have them 3 deep. Hell there are some Power 5 programs who run out pass rush specialists on the defensive line at 235 lbs.

So how many years of eligibility? One?

Hutch CC - 2 years
Middle Tenn - 1 year
Jackson State - 1 year
Aggies...?

Is eligibility automatically 5 years now or 6 or 7?

Tell it to Bill Parcells.

If he can find the ball and blow up plays, I don't care if he's 5'1" and 125.

At least he is stepping up in programs every time, not everyone or their bodies mature at the same rate. Stetson Bennett was the perfect example this year, went to smaller schools to get the playing time and experience and now he has a chance to play in the most physical conference, maybe even start. If not we have an experience backup and special teams guy.

I would much rather have Perkins and Hill but at this point we need bodies. We will not be getting 4-5 stars at this time so we have to deal with what is out there. Kind of a stop gap since we will need more transfer LBs next year since we will be short on depth next year again

Very, very few safeties in the sec that are 6-1 225. Georgia's projected starters are 205 and 180. Bamas are 211 and 203.

Georgia's projected starting linebackers this year are listed at 6-3 220, 6-1 225 and 6-3 240. Their backups are 6-3 223, 6-3 214, and 6-5 240.

LSU is 235, 235, 220, 213, 217, and 238 in the 2 deep.

This whole notion that LBers are 240 and safeties are 220 in the sec is bogus. There are just as many LBers that are in the 220-225 range than 230+ in the sec. Probably more so.

Also it wouldn't shock me if they can get him up to 230+ by fall camp anyways. He's coming from a much lower off-season program.

And if you are just referring to Mikes, one of Georgia's ILB is 6-3 220. They are a 3-4 look so have 2.

Bama's mike is 6-2 230
