SEC Network's Peter Burns shares the storylines surrounding SEC hoops

Everyone's favorite SEC Network anchor Peter Burns joined Wednesday morning's edition of TexAgs Radio to share his thoughts on everything SEC basketball. Burns dives into Buzz Williams' recent success and A&M's hire of Bobby Petrino.

Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • I think that's what we have seen Buzz Williams’ teams do. There may be teams that may be more fun to watch. Missouri basketball is fun to watch. That's not Buzz's style. The fact they don’t get more love is criminal.

  • Both A&M and Auburn are in similar positions when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. When you compare resumes, you will compare A&M and Auburn. Buzz would love to have the non-conference schedule back. Buzz found out what he could and could not get away with. Transfer portal players play a massive role, and you don't know what players you have until around this time. Last year was too late because they had the losing slide. Everyone knows their role. They are bought in.

  • There are only two locks in Alabama and Tennessee. Auburn needs to show they can grab some Q1 wins. A lot of teams are better off than Kentucky. They continue to struggle. They got their doors blown in at Rupp Arena. It was quiet in that building.

  • The problem with LSU is they don't have any offense scored other than KJ Williams. They are bad. They are the second-worst team in the SEC, maybe behind South Carolina. This is a dangerous game because A&M should beat them. LSU was relying on the transfer portal, and it's hard to get those guys to buy in.

  • Eric Musselman didn't know what the game plan was after they lost Nick Smith Jr. to injury. Musselman said they are finally understanding who they are. Top three coaches in the league are Eric Musselman at one, Nate Oats at two and Buzz Williams at three. That's my trio, and I don't think anyone is close.

  • Kentucky may be at the First Four in Dayton at this point. That shouldn't happen. Kentucky, year in and year out, should be a Georgia football discussion. There's a big disconnect there. Is Kentucky that bad, or has SEC basketball gotten a lot better? In the last five or six years, you have better coaches, facilities and players.

  • I love the hire of Bobby Petrino. It goes to show you the desperation Jimbo Fisher felt and needed. The best case scenario is that they struggled mightily so they would make changes. Nick Saban has had made changes, and they worked out. How is Jimbo Fisher going to adapt? The brilliance to it is Jimbo knows he can't overtake the offense. I think that's great. A&M needs that. Backs against the wall. Now does it pay off? I don't know. I don't know if he had that much talent before. I love it, but they have a long way to go before they catch Georgia or even LSU.

From the article:

Or even LSU?!? Didn't we just blow the doors off LSU in a year full of struggles? Kind of a strange take.

Kentucky's model for bringing in fresh talent that goes directly to the NBA is not succeeding. Arguably Calipari is failing while having a "lifetime" contract.
