Week Nine's Overnight Sensation: Conner Weigman, Quarterback

Each Monday during the 2022 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance over the weekend and earned the distinction of being the week’s ‘Overnight Sensation.’

Weig ‘Em.

After waiting patiently for his chance, Conner Weigman got the nod as starting quarterback against Ole Miss, and quite frankly, he lived up to the hype surrounding his name.

The freshman’s star-studded performance was marred by a 31-28 loss. However, it should be said that Weigman displayed undeniable character and leadership in nearly executing a comeback win over a top-15 team.

Coming on the field in the first quarter, Weigman completed all of his first six passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, including a perfectly thrown dart to the back corner of the end zone, where Evan Stewart used one hand to snag it for a score.

This season, Jimbo Fisher has notably struggled to get his quarterbacks to execute his complex playbook. Yet, the 18-year-old grabbed the offense by the reins and showed off his highly-anticipated five-star talent.

In what looked to be the most up-tempo the offense has looked all season, a combination of Weigman’s precision and chemistry with his fellow freshman classmates allowed the five-star to connect on some impressive passes. Weigman’s quick release and accuracy helped increase A&M’s success on offense, especially behind a struggling offensive line.

Weigman’s second passing touchdown of the night connected with Stewart, the two highest-rated offensive signees of Texas A&M’s heralded 2022 recruiting class.

Weigman threw for 338 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Beyond the stats, Weigman’s decision-making in the pocket did not go unnoticed. When pressured, the Cypress native swiftly got the ball out and did not pile up risky throws, showing maturity beyond his years.

Down 31-21 in the fourth quarter, the Aggies desperately needed to score to keep the game within reach. Weigman carried the Aggies 80 yards downfield in under two minutes to make it a one-score game — an absolutely gutsy drive by the freshman. On the next drive, the Aggies failed to convert a first down, washing out the freshman’s stellar debut.

The signal-caller fell just a couple of plays short of etching his name in history books as the last A&M freshman quarterback to knock off a top-15 team, attempting to follow in Johnny Manziel’s footsteps.

Additionally, Weigman’s performance displayed some equivalencies to the Heisman winner as the last A&M quarterback to reach over 300 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions against a Power 5 opponent was Manziel in the 2013 Peach Bowl.

When asked, Fisher said Weigman will get the nod moving forward as starting quarterback.

“Yeah, should be,” Fisher said. “Looking for him to play next week, and we'll get the other guys healthy and see where they're at. But I'm very comfortable with Conner playing and starting for us.”

Buckle up, Ags. The Weigman era has begun, and #15 seems poised to be an exceptional player in Aggieland.
