Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White
TexAgs' recruiting analyst Ryan Brauninger joined TexAgs Radio this morning for another edition of Recruiting Country, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting trail after the Aggies opened their season against Sam Houston.
Key notes from LaGrange head coach Matt Kates
- Bravion Rogers is one of the most talented kids as I’ve been around. He’s our punter and averaged about 50 yards a punt last week. He’s a kid that can do it all.
- He has matured in the last 12 months. Recruiting is a lot of pressure for these kids. He’s a celebrity in this town. Everyone knows who Bravion is in LaGrange.
- Bravion wanted to be sure. Kids are resilient in that way in that they want to make sure. When you are making a decision that big, you have to. When he decommitted, I immediately had five texts the next morning.
- He fits at A&M. Get him on campus, and he can affect the team. I think he’s an NFL corner. He has true 4.3 speed and a 6-foot-9 high jumper. He can play any of those five spots in the secondary.
Key notes from Ryan Brauninger
- Coach Kates didn't freak out when Bravion decommitted. Look at past commitments like Gabriel-Brownly Dindy. They kept the relationships and played the long game. They didn’t get mad at Johnny Bowens and now A&M has as good a shot as anyone to get him back.
- Bravion is going to be towards the top half of a smaller class. Getting Bravion back does not need to get lost in the shuffle because he is an athlete. He wanted to see the rotation of DBs against Sam Houston. All the healthy bodies freshman played. That sealed the deal for A&M.
- Hykeem Williams will make a decision toward to end of the month. That’s an enormous get. You have to stack these playmaking receivers. We think TJ Shanahan is close. There are a lot of A&M commits that think something is on the horizon. It could be TJ. He doesn't have a set date.
- Kyle Field has an impact. September will be as big of a month as any. In December, you are thinking about people signing on the dotted line. You are at 10 commitments right now. You could have 13 to 14 by the end of the month.
- Daymion Sanford was supposed to come last weekend, but apparently, if you have a late game, you cannot take a visit for an early kickoff. Ashton Funk was here, and Bravion and Anthony Hill spent the night. This week, the visitor list will grow a little more, and the Miami list will be massive. I think there will be some 2024 names that come this weekend and maybe get offers from the A&M staff. The Appalachian State visitor list will be out tomorrow.
- With Rueben Owens committed to Louisville, you have to understand that the kids don’t take the losses as seriously as the fans do. I think we'll see him on campus once or more than once. I dont think there's anything imminent decision for him to back away from Louisville.
- This recruiting class has not gone exactly to plan, but if I would have told you A&M would get Evan Stewart and Denver Harris, you would have laughed. A&M plays the long game. They are not going to land all of these kids. If you have 12 top-100 kids in a small class, that’s incredible, and that’s still a possibility. If they rattle off a couple more big commitments like Bravion, you will not be worried.
- They haven't sent out any new QB offers. Nothing has changed there. PJ Hatter is a guy A&M is taking a look at and they should. Malachi Nelson is on everyone's radar, and they’re still recruiting him. QB is an interesting follow, but you feel good about it because of what is on campus.
- A&M is not out of it with Derion Gullette. Same with Christian Brathwaite and Bryson Washington. Those are three off-the-radar guys.
