Former A&M wideout Ryan Swope projects who will 'get it done' on Saturday
For the first time in a long time, former Texas A&M wide receiver Ryan Swope joined Thursday's edition of TexAgs Radio to tell us who will "get it done" this weekend vs. Sam Houston. Swope also shares his thoughts on the A&M offense and much more.
Key notes from Ryan Swope interview
- I've been trying to keep up with these kids. The twins got me running like a wild dog, and we have another boy behind them. We have three. We already have a backfield. I am pumped for Stephen McGee and his first child. It's funny because I texted him a few days after to ask if it sunk in. He said that words can't explain it, and that's true. He's going to be a great dad, and Brit is going to be a great mother. I'm so happy for them, and I know they're taking it one day at a time. They're crushing it.
- I think it's going to be a good year. I was pumped to hear Haynes King was the starter, and I think that was the right call. You can't go wrong when leaning on experience, and as far as quarterbacks and receivers go, having a couple of years of chemistry helps tremendously. I don't think people understand that. Getting to know each other and getting on the same page is huge. We've seen that King is great on his feet and can extend plays. He's a competitor, and I'm excited to see what he can do.
- It's going to be an exciting year. Obviously, it's a tough schedule, but we have some weapons on the offensive side of the ball.
- Coming from high school to college at the receiver position, you're probably coming from a simple playbook and aren't used to reading defenses. In high school, you’re running essentially what the play tells you to. There is not much IQ and knowledge that goes into reading defenses until you get to this level. As a receiver during your first year, your brain is going a thousand miles an hour, and you can't play to your ability because you're always trying to process things. For me, I was constantly watching film and trying to learn how to read defenses. You see some of these guys make that transition so easily and seamlessly, and that's amazing because it requires so much time in the film room. Sometimes it takes time for those kids to get comfortable with it.
- I really think our receiving corps can take a bigger responsibility this year. I've seen too many dropped passes and not enough explosive plays in the last few years. Long plays win football games, and I haven't seen our receivers make those plays, day in and day out. I hate seeing dropped balls. Those are drive-killers.
- Devon Achane is the guy everyone expects to get it done, so I'll go a different route. I think Jalen Preston gets it done this week. We saw a glimpse at what he can do. He has a bring frame, and he could be a guy we could lean on this year. He has a quick first step, so I'm anxious to see what he can do. I think he's comfortable now and can go play.
- I think Notre Dame gets beat this week, and I think the Longhorns take an L as well. Oh wait, I thought Texas-Alabama was this week. I've been living under a rock. I also wouldn't be surprised if they lost to Louisiana Monroe either.
- We should have expanded the playoff a long time ago. So many of these bowl games don't matter. Let's have more games that matter and determine a champion. A 12-team playoff could be like March Madness, and everybody would watch it.
- A&M can be good. We're still young, and we're very talented on the backend. I know there is a great buzz in the locker room. I think we win nine games this year, but maybe we can get a bonus win to get to 10.
- Ole Miss worries me. The Mississippi schools always worry me, and they always play well against us. If we get through Mississippi, we should be good.
