Press Conference: Fisher, Aggies still grinding through Fall Camp
Kickoff to the 2022 season is just 16 days away, and later today, Texas A&M will conduct its 13th Fall Camp practice. On Thursday afternoon, Jimbo Fisher, Jaylon Jones and Fadil Diggs spoke to the media to provide an update on the Ags' preparation for the upcoming campaign.
The following are live, paraphrased notes from Jimbo Fisher’s Thursday afternoon media availability:
- We’re getting into days of camp. Guys are banged and fighting through knicks and knacks and bruises. I love the fortitude. They have great attitudes. The guys that got knicked up early are coming back. Saturday’s scrimmage could have been more consistent. From a penalty standpoint, we played well. The older guys did a good job of those things. Both sides made plays in the scrimmage. It was very competitive. It got physical. There were some big hits in the scrimmage. Plays were made on offense. Plays were made on defense. It’s a typical camp right now. We’re finding out who we are, where we are and where we need to be. The younger guys are all going to be really good players. Both fronts played well. Offensive guys making plays. Trying to run the young guys. They are seeing the whole blocking schemes. Good solid scrimmage. We have got a long way to go, but the effort and the attitude have been pretty good. We just need to get more consistent in how we do it.
- With the quarterback battle, we’ll wait and see. We’ll evaluate that as we go. Not putting a timetable on it. I’ll know when I know.
- Bryce Foster is practicing and playing well.
- Fadil Diggs is a really good leader. He is a guy that works, says 'yes sir' and 'no sir.' He's always helping the young guys and is a great example of how they need to go about their business. Good leader. He is a great example of how you want to play. He’s there every day. I can’t say enough good things about him.
- I rotated coaches because they've coached those positions. I like that rotation. Darrell Dickey has coached everything under the sun. Dameyune Craig played and coached quarterback. They are very interchangeable.
- No injuries right now that I can see keeping anyone from playing the first game.
- Aki Ogunbiyi is playing as good as anybody. he can play guard or tackle. Jordan Moko is doing a really good job.
- The communication is getting better. The execution has to go up, and that happens the longer you practice in fall camp.
- You can lead by example. Edgerrin Cooper does that. He's much more consistent. He's learning to take on blockers. Production to a coach and the outside world are different things. He's a down-in, down-out, consistent player. Sometimes, that's making plays or fitting so other guys can make plays.
- We have to make sure substitution, communication and execution is better. I want to see us understand situational football and understanding from a mental standpoint and finishing it out physically.
- We’re getting better. We’re in camp. We go to try those young guys and let them get a taste.
- I feel comfortable giving Amari Daniels, LJ Johnson and Le’Veon Moss the ball.
- We talk about skill guys. Protection is important. There are 100 things that go into taking shots in a game. You have to create explosive plays to get guys off you and create success.
- There’s been a few surprises. Fadil Diggs’ maturity. Earnest Crownover has been good. Layden Robinson in the role he has, and Cooper and Demani Richardson’s maturity. They have been here a long time. Those guys that stay around three years, four years and maybe even five, it's amazing how few mistakes they make and how well they play. The guys that decide to stay, it brings back good memories. We're caught up now in pure ability. Max Wright is another one. They aren’t superstars, but to a coach, they are. Upperclassmen jump in that category to me.
- Coach Dameyune Craig has been through it. He knows what is expected and what is demanded and also what it's like when you're out there.
- Matthew Wykoff is one I let slip through. He’s playing different positions. I apologize for not saying him earlier. I’ve been very pleased with him.
- We talk recruiting every day. I compartmentalize. We have enough people in here that keep me informed.
