Olympic medalist Bryce Deadmon recalls special moments throughout career
Former A&M track star and two-time Olympic medalist Bryce Deadmon joined TexAgs Radio to walk us through his professional successes following his time in Aggieland. The Olympic gold medalist discussed winning gold at the 2022 World Athletics Championships and much more.
Key notes from Bryce Deadmon interview
- The experience was better than I thought it would be. I’ve been to Eugune so many times. I didn’t feel like it was a championship meet because it was a familiar environment. The stands were getting packed, and I was like, “Oh shoot.” In Tokyo, no fans were there cause of COVID-19. It was crazy to hear thousands of fans cheering. It was a crazy experience for sure.
- Brandon Miller was my roommate in Eugene, and he did pretty well for his first championship. He should not be upset with how he did at all. He didn’t make it to the semifinals but doing that after a six to seven-month season is pretty impressive.
- Fred Kerley and I hung out a lot. He kept saying, “I run on Saturday. I get my gold medal on Saturday, and then I leave.” That’s what he did.
- It’s been cool learning what professional life is like with the contacts, sponsors and traveling to places I've never been to. The only downside is we have one free day. The transition has been different. When you go from one job to another, it’s never easy.
- When I qualified for the Olympics last year, I knew I could go pro. I ran at A&M for six years. I said if this is the end, I’m okay with that. I got seventh, and they came up to me and gave me a card saying I was an Olympian. I said, “What are you talking about? You gave this to the wrong person.” They said, “No. We changed the rules. We take the top eight.”
- On Bryce Deadmon Day in Missouri City, I have a track meet on that day. I have to get something together for next year. A Bryce Deadmon Day in College Station would be lit. Missouri City pumps out so many athletes. Fort Bend County as a whole has so many athletes. A lot of competition. Devon Achane is an athlete. I expect big things from him this year.
- One good thing that happened is Team USA booked the entire hotel for us. Most of the time, I was eating or watching TV.
- I definitely try to be optimistic and positive in every aspect of life.
- We did a team ceremony, and it was crazy to see how many medals we won. We obliterated everybody.
- A&M is great. Oh my goodness. I never considered going to A&M to begin with. The people I met, the athletes, coach Pat Henry, I was meant to be at Texas A&M University. I was recruited by other schools. My mom came in my room and said, “A&M has called for the past seven days.” I took an official visit. I guess I didn’t make a bad decision.
- I was going to go into a career in marketing and just live life. Most people's dream, when they enter college sports is to go pro, and it is a dream.
