The Maroon & White ride a four-game winning streak into Tampa on Thursday for the 2022 SEC Tournament. Aggie basketball head coach Buzz Williams joined TexAgs Radio to discuss the win over 'State, the matchup with Florida and more.
Key notes from Buzz Williams interview
- I don't know if you can predict anything that happened if you look at it as a whole. Nobody would've thought we would've won the first four then lose eight in a row, and I don't think anyone would've thought we would win our last four. I don't believe any of this was predictable.
- When you are in the mix of playing two games a week with one on the road, you get in such a rhythm and routine, but you become so absorbed in the process. Within our program, we don't think like that, and we have four signs in our facilities, and one of them is what's next.
- Tyrece Radford is tough as hell, all I know is we subbed him out for one possession in the second half, and I told him to go back in after the next media timeout, but the next thing I knew, he was in the next possession. He and Jackson are on the same wavelength as workers and people. Those guys are on the same wavelength inside the lines as well. It has added such a positive impact for every player within the program.
- Jackson and Boots have both become more vocal. Quenton Jackson can talk to anybody on or off the floor. When Boots speaks, everybody listens. Those guys have led our group in a very diligent way. Their leadership was visible within the program even when we were losing. What is historical is to lose eight in a row and do what we are doing now to close the season.
- All of the questions we have gotten from the media are all about the season ending. The season isn't over, and I don't partake in those questions. What we have been through and what we have learned is to be foolish and not act as any of those times happened. I think what we have to do is figure out how to win this next game. We have to have the right focus and energy to keep going.
- We have an extra day by playing on Thursday. We get a break emotionally and physically, but we need to focus on one game and win that before we have those future conversations.
- It sounds like Florida has changed a little bit defensively since the last time we played them. I have to do my research and see the context of what this game will be to formulate a plan. We will then go and study our game and take what we learned and how we apply it and take it into the next game.
- Henry Coleman has a stubborn streak that comes from his mom, and his competitiveness comes from his dad. When he has those two mixes, he really helps us. If you only look at the box score and when he is productive, it changes how we play defensively. It not only benefits him but everyone on the team.
