By The Numbers: Texas A&M basketball starts 2-0 in league play

Here’s a statistical look, by the numbers, at Buzz Williams’ Texas A&M men’s basketball team after a 13-2 start to the 2021-22 season and a 2-0 start to SEC play...

1.000 - A&M’s winning percentage this season at home and in true road games. The Aggies are 9-0 inside Reed Arena this season and 2-0 in the home arena of their opponents. A&M’s only two losses were neutral site defeats to Wisconsin (Las Vegas) and TCU (Houston). The 13-2 start is A&M’s best since the Alex Caruso-led 2016 team opened the season at 17-2 and 7-0 in SEC play en route to the SEC Championship and a magical run to the Sweet 16.

2 - Teams in the SEC that are undefeated in conference play. Texas A&M is one of those schools, sitting at 2-0 in the SEC with wins over Georgia and Arkansas. The only other school that doesn’t have a league loss is Auburn (3-0).

6 - Wins in a row for the Aggies. A&M’s last loss was to TCU, 68-64, in Houston on Dec. 11. The Ags have scored 80 or more in every game during this winning streak.

8 - Number of players that have led the Aggies in scoring in a game this season. Additionally, six different players have led A&M in rebounding, and five different players have led A&M in assists.

#9 - A&M’s national ranking in defensive turnover rate. The Aggies are forcing a turnover on 25.2% of their opponent’s possessions. That ranks second in the SEC behind only LSU (25.7%). With 19.1 turnovers forced per game, the Aggies hold a slight lead over LSU (19.0) in the SEC and rank third nationally behind Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

11 - Double-digit games this season for A&M super senior Quenton Jackson — all off the bench. Arguably the best Sixth Man in the SEC, Jackson is averaging 13.5 points per game in just 22.7 minutes of action per contest. He’s shooting over 40% from three for the second straight season.

#13 - A&M’s SEC ranking in rebounding. The Aggies average 35.9 rebounds per game, tied for 136th nationally. A&M’s leading rebounder is guard Tyrece “Boots” Radford, who averages 5.6 rebounds per game.

17 - Margin that A&M has led by in the second half of each of its first two SEC games. In the 81-79 win at Georgia, the Aggies led 55-38 with 17:40 left in the game before the Bulldogs stormed back and eventually took their first lead with 5.5 seconds on the clock, leading to Marcus Williams’ game-winning three-pointer. In the 86-81 win over Arkansas, the Ags led 65-48 with 11:01 left to play before the Hogs’ ferocious late-game comeback that saw them pull to within one point, 79-78, inside the final minute of play.

18.5 - Scoring average in SEC play for Duke transfer Henry Coleman III to go along with eight rebounds per game in the early going against league competition. The sophomore went for 23 points and seven rebounds in the road win at UGA and added 14 points and nine boards in Saturday’s victory over Arkansas. On the season, Coleman averages 10 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

#38 - A&M’s national ranking in points per game. The Aggies are averaging 77.2 points per game so far this season. That’s 12.9 points per game higher than last year’s average. A&M ranks fifth in scoring among SEC teams.

38.7% - 3-point percentage as a team in 2021-22. That’s up 8.8% from last season and currently ranks first among SEC teams and 16th nationally. The Ags are averaging 9.2 made 3-pointers per game during their current six-game winning streak. A&M made 117 threes last year. They’ve already made 121 threes this year.

47.0% - A&M’s field goal percentage, which ranks third in the SEC. That’s up 5.5% from last season. Senior Ethan Henderson would be leading the SEC in field goal percentage at 62.5% but is not close to the minimum threshold for shot attempts to count in the league rankings.

52.2% - 3-point percentage on the season for guard Andre Gordon. The junior shot just 27.2% from beyond the arc as a freshman and 30.6% from three last season. Gordon is the SEC’s leader in 3-point field goal percentage. He ranks 19th in all of college basketball and seventh among high major players. Quenton Jackson (40.0%) ranks 10th in the SEC in three-point percentage, and Wade Taylor IV (39.2%) ranks 12th. Marcus Williams (36.4%) is tied for 19th in the league, and Hassan Diarra (35.6%) is tied for 23rd.

59 - A&M’s NET Ranking as of Sunday. The NET is a key formula-based ranking that the NCAA Tournament selection committee uses to help guide them come Selection Sunday in mid-March. There are seven SEC teams with a higher NET Ranking than the Aggies, including six in the current top-20, offering A&M plenty of opportunities moving forward to dramatically improve its Tournament resume.

#344 - A&M’s ranking among 358 D1 basketball teams in free-throw percentage (63.7%). That’s dead last among SEC teams and tied with West Virginia for the second-lowest percentage among high major teams (USC is at 60%).
