SEC Network's Cole Cubelic details significance of the Joe Moore Award
Key notes from Cole Cubelic interview
- It has been a busy season for me, all over the SEC Network and ESPN covering college football. I’m excited to spend some time with family before I head out and call the Music City Bowl and the Rose Bowl.
- The Joe Moore Award is the only award that goes to an entire unit instead of an individual in the country. I still don’t think people fully understand what the award means. Aaron Taylor came up with the idea, and the name of it to honor his former offensive line coach. You don’t vote for this award unless you played the position, coached it or evaluated it in the NFL. We all have legitimate credentials, not just a geographic assembly of sports reporters.
- I’m the chairman of the voting committee for the Joe Moore Award. I assist with the decision-making, but I just help put guys together and discuss the candidates. It’s a lot of fun.
- Consistency was a BIG reason for Michigan winning the award. It was a tough predicament judging offensive lines across college football this season. We saw units look good for two or three weeks at a time, then fall off. We felt like Michigan got better every single week and was peaking when it mattered most. They exemplified a lot of the qualities that we look for. We also look for an offensive line that contributes to their team winning football teams.
- Looking at Michigan and their gap-scheme runs, Georgia hasn’t seen much of that this season. So, it’ll be interesting to see how this matchup shakes up. I think Michigan will have a chance to hold up in pass protection. The big thing will be how they go off-tendency to keep Georgia guessing so they can’t just tee off between the tackles. Georgia looked very human against Alabama, so it’ll be interesting to see how they bounce back.
- Unfortunately, we’ve done everything we’ve been asked to do, especially college football players, and the game is still being impacted despite doing everything they were asked to do. I don’t know if we’re on the path to going back to where things were in 2020, but that’s kind of what it feels like right now. I’m not too fond of it for the players. The bowl game is a reward for players, and they are having that taken away from them. I just hope it doesn’t impact more teams. Where I sit right now, I don’t see Texas A&M as the only team affected by this.
- I don’t even want to talk about forfeitures in the College Football Playoff. It would be gross for the sport. We have to find a way around it and make sure these games get played.
