Week 11's Overnight Sensation: Muhsin Muhammad III, Wide Receiver
Each Monday during the 2021 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance and earned the distinction of being the week’s ‘Overnight Sensation.’
MOOOOOOOOOSE!
Freshman receiver Muhsin Muhammad III had by far his best day as a college football player on Saturday in Texas A&M’s 52-3 victory over Prairie View A&M at Kyle Field. The redshirt freshman from Charlotte, North Carolina, hauled in five passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns as the contest’s leading receiver in the Aggies’ final regular-season home game of the year.
“Anytime you go on the field and the numbers on the scoreboard are for real, it matters. You can do it in practice all day. I don’t care who you play,” Jimbo Fisher said postgame.
“(Muhammad) went out in that environment and played tremendously. He did a great job.”
With the outcome never in doubt, Muhammad saw plenty of action, making his first contribution on special teams late in the first quarter. In place of Ainias Smith, Muhammad fielded a Caleb Darbone punt at the A&M 17 and returned it 23 yards to the 40.
In the second quarter, Muhammad got started with a three-yard catch. Four plays later, Zach Calzada connected with him again, this time on a shallow crossing route. Muhammad weaved 33 yards to the endzone for his second career touchdown.
On Texas A&M’s first drive of the second half, Calzada floated a beautiful pass off his back foot to the back corner of the endzone. Despite tight coverage, Muhammad reeled in a highlight grab for a 30-yard score. Muhammad’s second touchdown of the day pushed the Aggies’ lead to 45-0.
Even when Jimbo Fisher subbed in his second-team offense, Muhammad remained in the ballgame, but the Aggies only threw the ball five times in the final 20:37 of play.
Muhammad came to Aggieland in 2020 as part of a loaded receiver haul that included five-star Demond Demas and Devin Price, as well as tight end Blake Smith. Having seen the field in just ten games, Moose has contributed the most out of that quartet. On Saturday, he offered the 12th Man a glimpse of his NFL pedigree and what is to come.
