Texas A&M ranked No. 14 in first round of College Football Playoff rankings

Texas A&M (6-2) is ranked 14th in the initial College Football Playoff rankings released on ESPN Tuesday evening. The Aggies are one of seven SEC teams in the top 25, including Georgia (8-0) and Alabama (7-1) in the top two spots.

A top ten team entering the season, the Aggies struggled early following the loss of starting quarterback Haynes King and with a largely inexperienced offensive line still finding its way.

However, as quarterback Zach Calzada has settled in and the front five has found a rhythm, Texas A&M has started to look more like the team many expected. The Aggies knocked off Alabama, then the top-ranked team in the country, on October 9. That seemed to spark Jimbo Fisher’s squad, who rolled over Missouri and South Carolina in dominant wins the next two weeks.

Texas A&M is the only team with a win over a team in the top two of the rankings. The Aggies’ next two opponents are also ranked inside the top 20: Auburn is No. 13 and Ole Miss is No. 16. Rounding out the ranked SEC teams are Mississippi State at No. 17 and Kentucky at ranked No. 18.

There was no doubt Georgia would sit atop the first set of rankings, as the Bulldogs have been dominant through eight games. Uncertainty has marked speculation about the other top spots. 

Michigan State seemed to solidify its spot at No. 2 by beating previously undefeated Michigan on Saturday. Group of Five contender Cincinnati is 8-0 with a win over Notre Dame. Oklahoma is also undefeated but hasn't been impressive, barely scraping out wins over inferior opponents. Despite the loss to the Aggies, Alabama is widely considered one of the best four in the country.

Wake Forest is also undefeated but playing in a weakened ACC. Notre Dame and six other Power 5 teams enter November with only one loss: Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Baylor.

I cannot see any world that Cincy and Wake both get in.
A 1 loss BIG10 or SEC champ will get in over an undefeated Wake team or a Cincy team.

Georgia gets in as an SEC champ or with SECCG 1 loss.
The Big 10 Champ gets in even with 1 loss.
Oregon gets in with 1 loss
A non-Georgia SEC Champ would get in ALSO even with 1 or 2 losses (*if this happens)
An undefeated Cincy would be next up.
Then an undefeated Oklahoma
Then an undefeated Wake

^ To clarify: An SEC Champion 1 loss Alabama, a 2 loss Auburn (with wins over Alabama and Georgia) or a 2 loss A&M (with wins over Alabama and Georgia) will be deemed more deserving than an undefeated team with a weak schedule.

Not likely anyone gets past Georgia though. It's their year.

We aren't a darling. They are trying to suggest we wouldn't make the 12-team playoff now that it has been conceived.

David Ubben…defending Cinci and Wake Forest…exposes them lie. Yes…probably paywalled but hard to summarize his broad argumentation. The simple version is this is a P5 invitational. I would offer it is designed to enrich the P5 schools by emphasizing have and have not status instead of building for parity. Expand to 16 teams and top eight conferences to fix and do it immediately. This year would be soon enough.

Aggie ranking is fair. And yes, we should end up top 10 if we win out. And I hope they end up bumping us over some 1 loss teams versus strength of schedule such as OU, OSU, Baylor...Basically all Big 12 teams w one loss!

I do hate thought of Wake Forest and Cinn going undefeated although I expect Wake to loss this weekend. But Cinn will likely go undefeated and make it into the top 4....then get absolutely destroyed 1st CFP round. Hell....give em to us at #5 for a NY6 bowl.....PLEASE.

If wake runs the table they deserve to be in no matter the outcome. If any of the traditional programs in the ACC ran the table they would be in.

Will they win? Probably not, but running the table in a major conference should mean something.

OU will be in if they win out. Starting at 8 is funny though.

Cinnci is interesting. They have an actual top 10 win.

Also that top 10 win is ND who has an easy schedule remaining. Don't be surprised if ND is in at the end of the year.

I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. If we win out and pull a Big XII K-State like upset on UGA we will have been on an 8 game win streak beating two #1's and other ranked teams in the process. It would be crazy to keep us out.

The likelihood of us getting to Atlanta is very slim. We need someone to beat Bama and I don't think either LSU or Auburn is up to the task. The best team Auburn has beaten is Miss, and they got doubled up by Bama. That plays well for us against Auburn but not well for us winning the West. LSU has lost 3 of 4, and beating Florida isn't that great of a win. Especially by only a TD at BR. The teams Florida has beaten this year have only won 13 games combined.

A 2-loss SEC team will NOT be considered for the playoff. Especially over undefeated teams like Cincy and Wake. That would obliterate any credibility the committee has. Its one thing to **** and piss on the South/Central Floridas of the world, but to leave an ACC team or a team that has a win over Notre Dame out of the mix will lead to all sorts of issues. IF they do that, I wouldn't be surprised if some form of litigation or Congressional hearings followed. I don't know what they'd allege but Ohio congressmen would certainly start making noise.

No one outside of Cincinnati city limits cares about Cincinnati. Even inside of the city they probably barely make a blip. Its a one team state.

From an outside perspective its easy to get caught up in the national stories. When UoH was good or interesting, a lot of my out of region friends and family would ask if the city or state was going nuts following the cougs. Which to us is hilarious because it didn't even exist on the radar of the state or city. I knew 10 UofH grads (people are moderate sports fans who will follow the Texans and Rockets and Astros) who don't can't even name a single player from that era or this year's 7-1 team. Because commuter schools are going to be commuter schools.

If an Ohio Senator is going to take up a case related to college football, its going to be for Ohio State. And if the choice is between Ohio State and Cincinnati, the current student of Cincy might even argue for Ohio State. They're all fans, they just couldn't get in. Or they're there for design or some niche thing and couldn't care about football at all.

Wake is an interesting case. Greensboro/Winston Salem is an surprisingly large metro area and Wake is their team. The only pro or college team they have of any significance. The people will support and be interesting in their success. You might find a NC congressmen who would take up that cause. But they won't get support from the NC delegation. West NC and charlotte have a lot of SCAR and Clemson fans. The rest of the state revolves around the triangle. Duke, UNC, and NC State consider Wake the weird cousin who they see on Thanksgiving.
