Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • It would've felt nice if you had a big lead or even a lead going into the fourth quarter. That got a little hairy after Haynes King went down.

  • Let's start with the good: It looked like a Wrecking Crew defense of the past after the first quarter. That's why you brought in Mike Elko. You needed to make adjustments, and they locked down. You needed to have that when the offense wasn't rolling.

  • Isaiah Spiller and the game that he had late when you needed it was fantastic. The two catches that he had were game-changers.

  • If you want to be that Alabama gold standard, it's about who has the better offensive line. Alabama has it right now. A&M couldn't get push against Colorado, and outside of the injury to King, that was the biggest concern I had.

  • With Zach Calzada, it's just confidence. With reps, you're going to feel more comfortable. It must've been a whirlwind for him. It was just chaos. Then it was like, "Calm down. I've done this before." That's what I saw in the fourth quarter. What concerns me was the lack of separation for the wide receivers. This is as talented of a skill group in the SEC, but where was that?

  • It was just an ugly, ugly win. It doesn't matter because in a couple of weeks, you're going to either beat Alabama or you're not.

  • In Arkansas-Texas, that was a lot of pent-up aggression. The fan base was fired up. You could feel it when you got into that building. That fan base was starved for that. I didn't expect Arkansas to look that dominant, especially on the offensive line. On the Texas side, they've been ranked and been OK in the Big 12 because it's Big 12 football. It's not five-stars every week. Imagine if Texas took that game in Fayetteville and followed it with College Station and Tuscaloosa?

  • I think the way A&M sets up against Arkansas works well because they can set up in a box and win a lower game. If A&M gets into a shootout, it worries me now, especially because Haynes King isn't going to be your guy.

  • How many times did we talk about Kevin Sumlin's crew going 4-0 or 5-0? It was also like, "Have they been tested?" Calzada won a game for you in the fourth quarter, and you recognize how you're going to have to adjust that offense now.

  • Every time I watch the Miami cat, it gets better. That's the best highlight Miami football has had in years. Every time I watch it, I'm gasping. When the guy holds him up like Simba at the end, it's just incredible.

  • I look at that Florida State proposal as needing somebody in a marriage that's going to love you through the worst of times. You'd find out right there if she's a ride-or-die girl. Things of the logistics of that proposal. He looked at the schedule and saw Jacksonville State as their best chance to win, so he had his family and her family and the photographers. At least my man stuck to his game plan; that's not something the Florida State defense can say.
