Fisher names Haynes King starting QB heading into 2021 season
Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher announced redshirt freshman quarterback Haynes King will be the starting quarterback when the Aggies open the season on Sept. 4 against Kent State.
Fisher told John Granato and Lance Zierlein of ESPN 97.5 Houston that King won a close competition over sophomore Zach Calzada.
Last season King backed up starter Kellen Mond. He completed 2 of 4 passes for 59 yards. That included a 42-yard touchdown pass to Max Wright against South Carolina.
King, who has great speed, also rushed for 43 yards on six carries.
A four-star prospect out of Longview High School in 2020, King led the Lobos to a state championship in 2018. It was Longview’s first state championship since 1937.
A&M enters the season ranked No. 6 in national polls. The Aggies hope King can lead them to their first national championship since 1939.
