Notes from Vic Schaefer Interview

* Says the games against Texas and Iowa State come from two different ends of the spectrum. Was so embarrassed losing to Texas at home the way we did. Was so embarrassed he had to leave dinner with friends after the game.

* Says we were out-hustled and out-played. It’s bad enough to let that happen but it’s even worse to let it happen at home against our rival.

* To go from that game to the game in Ames, Iowa where we have had very little success in the past was a good feeling.

* Says our kids were really dominant defensively. Establishing an atmosphere for how we played defense started from the tip-off, even with Kelsey Bone getting in foul trouble early.

* Says who we played in the mid-week games had more to do with the mid-week struggles than it just being the middle of the week. At the end of the day, it’s his responsibility to get the girls to play defense.

* Coaching this team at times is frustrating, but it is also fun. Says he can’t think of anything he would rather do and just has to stay after it and stay after the players.

* Says it helps to have players on the team that understand the importance of playing defense. Trying to spread that mentality through the whole team and not just half or three-fourths of the team.

* Says at the end of the day, he has to do a better job with coaching the team.

* Statistically, Alexia Standish is playing well. She isn’t turning it over but needs to make shots when she is left open. One of many things seen when recruiting her was her ability to make shots when she isn’t guarded so she needs to step up and make those shots. Says that in the last month, Standish has made some great strides and is playing well. The competition every day in practice pushes her to be better.

* Says Standish is getting more comfortable with her knee. It’s always hard for a freshman to overcome that mental pain, but she is doing a good job with it.

* Says you can’t be happier to see success for someone like Skylar Collins who is one of the most dedicated individuals outside of practice. She has put in her time and paid her dues, and it’s great to see her making shots and helping the team. She has a great understanding of how we play defensively and can really fill that role that Maryann Baker built last year.

* Says we desperately need another wing player who can help defend and help us in scoring.

* It helps to be back in a routine and back going to class. While it’s nice to have the break at Christmas time, it’s really the worst time of the year for us as coaches.

* Says the Big 12 is such a nightmare to play in because of the high level of basketball being played and doesn’t know if you can ever be favored when playing on the road in this league.

* Hopefully, seven games from now we are going to be a lot better of a basketball team. Coach Blair mentioned it to the team yesterday that we fully expect to get better in the coming weeks. Having the men’s practice team back is a big plus as well.
