Key notes from Spencer Tillman interview

  • If you're looking at the aggregate over the last ten years, Texas is in a more desperate position compared to Texas A&M. Those who are usually in need of help are the last to realize it.

  • When Mack Brown left, there were zero players that were drafted from his last recruiting class, which was supposed to be pretty good. Brown was always known for his recruiting, and he was my offensive coordinator at Oklahoma. For it to happen like that, there had to be some other reason why Texas wasn't getting players. Not having anybody drafted was the inflection point for me.

  • Texas A&M is in a better position because of its leadership than Texas is in right now. It begins with leadership. A&M has the resources and facilities. Jimbo Fisher's reputation speaks for itself. That combined with the tradition and rekindling the Wrecking Crew defensive mindset could pay dividends. It's a spread era, so you have to judge defenses a little bit differently. Texas A&M has as strong of a chance as anybody to win right now.

  • There are two teams that are elite right now: Alabama and Clemson. I wouldn’t even consider Ohio State elite at the moment. Beneath that, there are a few programs, and A&M is among them, that can compete.

  • Overall, this season is going to be interesting. The only reference point we have was 1918 because that was the last pandemic, and that pandemic is what helped establish Methodist Hospital in Houston. There is so much uncertainty heading into this year and so many similarities from back then. We will see how it looks on Labor Day, and the crowds will be part of that. At any point, the guard rails could come off and an outbreak could occur. However, I think we're going to be in a good place.

  • If we can survive what we survived last year, there is nothing that is going to stop college football from being played. That's a good thing.

I've heard him speak twice at conferences and he spent the entire time telling everyone how smart he is. He's the second most arrogant person I've ever heard of.
