Texas A&M hires Houston's Gerrod Chadwell as women's golf coach
Gerrod Chadwell, who coached Houston to eight American Athletic Conference championships, has been named Texas A&M’s women’s golf coach as first reported by Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols.
Chadwell was also named the AAC women’s golf coach of the year 2016, 2018 and 2019.
“We are incredibly excited to have Coach Chadwell, Stacy, and Chesnee Lynn join us here in Aggieland,” said Texas A&M Director of Athletics Ross Bjork via a release. “Throughout the search, his name was always at the top of our list. The more we researched him, the more we learned that his recruiting acumen and his commitment to providing a great atmosphere for his players are what really stands out.”
In a stellar coaching career, his teams have won 27 team tournament championships (eight at Houston) and 23 individual tournament championships (eight at Houston).
“Here at A&M, we have an incredible foundation to build something great, and with the support, we have from the top down, I know we can do just that,” Chadwell said via a release. “I have admired the 12th Man from afar for a long time, and to now be a part of it is a humbling experience. I can’t wait to get to campus to begin preparing for the fall.”
He also won junior college team national championships in 2008 and 2009 as head coach at Redlands College in his hometown of El Reno, Oklahoma.
Chadwell received All-American honors in 2001 at East Central Oklahoma University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a Master's in Sports Administration.
From 2005-07 he was an instructor at the prestigious Dave Pelz Golf where he worked with Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Annika Sorenstam, among others.
He became Redland’s head coach in 2008. His teams not only won two national championships but also finished third overall in 2010. He was named junior college National Coach of the Year in ’08 and ’09.
Chadwell joined Oklahoma as an assistant coach in 2011. In three years in Norman, he was part of a program that advanced to the NCAA Regionals in three straight years and consecutive NCAA Championship appearances in 2012 and 2013.
He was then named Houston’s first women’s golf coach and quickly led the Cougars to prominence.
Houston won consecutive AAC championships in 2018 and ’19 to become the first program in league history to capture back-to-back conference titles.
