No. 5 Texas A&M headed to the Orange Bowl to face No. 13 North Carolina

The Aggies are taking their talents to South Beach.

On Sunday afternoon, it was announced that No. 5 Texas A&M will play in the 2021 Capital One Orange Bowl vs. No. 13 North Carolina. The Aggies and Tar Heels will do battle on January 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL. The announcement came just hours after A&M narrowly missed out on the College Football Playoff’s four-team field.

For the Aggies, this is their first Orange Bowl berth since the 1944 New Year’s Day contest with LSU, in which the Tigers defeated the Maroon & White, 19-14.

It will be Texas A&M’s first appearance in a “New Year’s Six” bowl since that moniker was created in 2014 to consolidate the most prestigious bowl games in accordance with the College Football Playoff semifinal games.

Heading into the postseason, A&M (8-1) is riding a seven-game winning streak and have won their last six contests by double digits, each against Southeastern Conference foes. The only blemish on the Aggies’ record is a week two loss to No. 1 Alabama.

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is well-acquainted with this particular bowl destination. While he was the head coach at Florida State from 2010-2017, Fisher was 2-0 in Orange Bowl games. In 2013, Fisher’s Seminoles defeated Northern Illinois, 31-10. Three years later, FSU won a thriller after they scored a touchdown with 36 seconds remaining to beat Michigan, 33-32.

North Carolina finished the regular season with an 8-3 record, 7-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tar Heels most recently lit up the scoreboard in their regular-season finale, hanging 62 points on then-No. 10 Miami on Dec. 12. Still, UNC has lost to Florida State (3-6), Virginia (5-5) and No. 4 Notre Dame (10-1) this year.

While the Aggies and Tar Heels have never met on the gridiron, a familiar face will patrol the North Carolina sideline on the first Saturday in January. Mack Brown is in the second year of his second stint as head coach in Chapel Hill. Previously, Brown was the head man of the Texas Longhorns from 1998-2013, and during his tenure in Austin, Brown was 10-4 vs. Texas A&M.

The 2021 Capital One Orange Bowl is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kick-off and will be aired on ESPN.

it's amazing how many "first time since the war " things have happened this year for A&M and for college football in general.

and here's another one...the maroon-n-white in the Orange Bowl

The committee said that UNC was better than anyone we beat this year except UF. UNC's greatness is what kept us out of the playoffs. This is a nice consolation "put up or shut up game."

A 2021 Orange will complement our Cotton trophy from 2013 nicely. You will never get the benefit of the doubt tie-breaker nod to the CFP without winning games like this bowl along the way. Regardless of disappointment the team has to go out and destroy UNC and not play down to the CFP decision like Georgia (tu) or even Bama (ou and utah) in the past to much lesser bowl opponents!

Lose "1" game each year consistently until we lose "0" games is the progression and formula. You can't expect to be given "anything in life...you have to take it"!

Oh, that and also Clemson not playing their best player so they could have a mulligan. If we had sat Mond against Bama, we'd be in.

Once again, highly coveted media-darling status rules the day over strength of schedule and any sense of reasonableness. I can't wait to see how A&M fares against UNC, especially considering that Notre Dame (laughably) hung its hat on a win over UNC (in addition to a win over a sans-Lawrence Clemson).

I have not been kind to Mond. Watching his recent performances against Tennessee, South Carolina, etc. converted me to a fan. Alabama had Jaylen Waddle when they beat us. He hasn't played since. Notre Dame beat Clemson without Trevor Lawrence. We got jobbed. We are better than Ohio State and Notre Dame. I believe the team that beat Tennessee yesterday can play with anybody.

If we win, it's a win by definition. Otherwise you sound like BYU prior to the Holiday Bowl and that didn't seem to work out well for them. If there's a game, there's something to play for.

My post had nothing to do with Mond. If anything, I called him our best player. My point is that if you just sit your best player in your toughest game, it's like you get a free loss that doesn't count against you. But if you beat a short-handed team, you get full credit. In our case, if we had just sat Mond, we would be considered 8-0, and the Bama win wouldn't help them, but they'd have it anyway.

Still great progress from Jimbo and the Ags!

sometimes it seems like people think we're Bama.."JUST the Orange Bowl?????"

We'll get there.

Imho, the Aggies are not up to Clemson or Alabama yet. I believe they could go heads up with ND or Ohio State. So , I think the committee (after painting themselves into a corner with ND and a no play schedule of OS) did what they had to do. But if we beat NC , we should be ranked # 3 at the least....and thats the next step we need to get to..

After all is said and done I suspect we're going to be glad we went to the Orange bowl.
I predict an impressive win over North Carolina. I don't see us beating Alabama.
