Week Seven's Overnight Sensation: Jaylon Jones, Cornerback
Each Monday during the 2020 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance and earned the distinction of being the week’s ‘Overnight Sensation.’
Jaylon Jones arrived in Aggieland as a feather in the cap of Jimbo Fisher's 2020 recruiting class. The five-star corner was one of the highest-rated players in the entire country. Early in his Texas A&M career, Jones has already paid dividends.
The Cibolo Steele product has started each of the Aggies' seven games at cornerback. Jones has registered multiple tackles in every game, and quarterbacks have, at times, deliberately thrown away from him.
However, Jaylon finally got his hands on the football this weekend when the Aggies hosted LSU on a rainy night in Aggieland.
With just under 9:30 to play in the second quarter, a 54-yard pass play had the Bayou Bengals knocking on the door of the red zone. However, two plays later, sophomore safety Demani Richardson tipped a T.J. Finley pass up into the air, and a diving snag by Jones ensured that the ball never touched the ground.
The interception was the first of what is likely many to come during his career in the Maroon & White. Jones very nearly had a second pick later in the contest, but the rain-soaked ball slipped through his hands.
In addition to the interception, Jones had five tackles, including four solo stops, and a pass break-up on the evening. The five tackles are his second-highest total this season behind the six he recorded in his collegiate debut versus Vanderbilt on September 26.
Aggie fans knew Jones' upside was through the roof when he signed on the dotted line last December, but his physical gifts and high football IQ are already beginning to shine on Saturdays in College Station.
