TexAgs All-SEC Team of the Week: Week Eight

November 18, 2020
4,059

Postponements due to COVID-19 left the Southeastern Conference with just a three-game schedule last week.

There was no lack of scoring, though. The average score per team was 45.3 points.

Obviously, there were some great individual offensive performances. But defense seemed postponed, too. That’s the way it looks on the weekly All-SEC team.

Offense

Quarterback: Kyle Trask (Florida)

Trask, a senior from Manvel High, torched Arkansas for 356 yards and six touchdowns; he had as many scoring tosses as incompletions. He had five TD passes and four incompletions in the first half of the Gators’ 63-35 win. The Hogs had allowed just nine TD passes in their first six games. The Gators played without star tight end Kyle Pitts, but Trask still completed passes to nine different receivers.

Harris shined vs. Ole Miss.

Running Back: Kevin Harris (South Carolina) and Chris Rodriguez (Kentucky)

South Carolina lost a 59-42 shootout to Ole Miss, but Harris – a sophomore – was magnificent, rushing for 243 yards and five TDs on 25 carries. Rodriguez, also a sophomore, had 13 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns, including a 74-yard scoring jaunt early in the fourth quarter of the Wildcats’ 38-35 win against Vanderbilt.

Wide Receiver: Trevon Grimes (Florida), Elijah Moore (Ole Miss) and Shi Smith (South Carolina)

Grimes, a senior from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas, had the best game of his career with six receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Razorbacks. Moore, a junior from St. Thomas Aquinas (yep, he and Grimes were prep teammates), had another monster outing in the Rebels’ win, with 13 catches for 225 yards and two TDs; he is the first receiver in SEC history with back-to-back 225-yard games, as he had 238 yards in Ole Miss’ win over Vandy on Oct. 31. In addition, it was his third 225-yard outing of the season, as he had 227 yards in a season-opening loss to Florida. Smith, a senior, had 10 receptions for 117 yards and a score in the Gamecocks’ loss. Imagine how productive he could be if South Carolina had a legit No 2 receiver; as it is, Smith has 53 receptions on the season.

Offensive Line: T Nick Broeker (Ole Miss), T Stone Forsythe (Florida), G Richard Gouraige (Florida), T Landon Young (Kentucky) and Jovaughn Gwyn (South Carolina)

Forsythe, a senior, and Gouraige, a sophomore, helped Florida pile up 36 first downs and 593 yards of offense in the rout of Arkansas. The Gators rushed for a season-high 208 yards. Broeker led the way up front for Ole Miss, enabling the Rebels to amass 708 total yards; Ole Miss rushed for 195 yards and Matt Corral was sacked just once on 32 passing attempts. Young, a senior, helped clear the way as UK rushed for 308 yards in its win against Vandy. The Wildcats averaged 8.8 yards per rush.

Defense

There is no need to pick an all-defense team for the week. Consider: Of the six SEC teams that played this past weekend, all six gave up at least 35 points and two surrendered 59 or more.

There is no need to pick an all-defense team for the week. Consider: Of the six SEC teams that played this past weekend, all six gave up at least 35 points and two surrendered 59 or more. And all six allowed at least 407 total yards, with three giving up at least 548 yards. Special mention to South Carolina’s “defense”: The Gamecocks surrendered 59 points and 708 total yards and forced just one punt.

Specialists

Kicker: No kicker did anything of note.

Punter: Colin Goodfellow (Kentucky)

The Wildcats were without All-America candidate Max Duffy, who missed the game against Vandy for undisclosed reasons. That meant Goodfellow, a senior walk-on who is majoring in nursing, would see his first action as a Wildcat. He came through in a big way, averaging 46.3 yards on three punts, dropping one inside the 20.

Returner: No return man did anything of note.
