Key notes from Billy's analysis on Wydermyer
- I think he's headed towards first-team All-SEC honors and eventually a nice career in the NFL. If he continues on this trajectory, he could be a great pro. This year, I think he could be a first-team All-SEC tight end. I think he has a great shot at earning those honors. He's going to be used a lot, and Kellen Mond trusts him a lot.
- Last year's true freshman class was outstanding with DeMarvin Leal and Demani Richardson, but I think Wydermyer was the best one. What he did against that competition last year was amazing. He blew the game open against South Carolina. He kept A&M in the game against Ole Miss. His catch against Oklahoma State was the biggest play of the game and provided the energy that the team needed. He even had confidence builders against Clemson and Alabama with three touchdowns total in those two games. He had a big play at Georgia. He got it done against elite SEC defenses.
- Jalen has the size and strength. He is a willing blocker, but if he gets better as a blocker — I think he'll gain a better understanding of the technical side of it from Cooley this year — I think he could be as good as any tight end in college football. You would see Wydermyer get in there during high school. He wasn't scared of anything.
- The sky is the limit for this guy. I think he could be a first-round pick when he leaves A&M if he keeps trending like this. He is special.
- There were a couple of players in Wydermyer's recruiting class that didn't match up with their offer list, their tape and recruiting ranking. Ainias Smith was the most grossly under-recruited player in the class. Wydermyer's offer list and tape did not match with his ranking. I don't know what people were missing with this kid. He had offers from everyone, and it might've been one of the most bizarre three-star rankings I've ever seen.
- For what A&M wants to do in the SEC, Jalen Wydermyer is the perfect fit.
