2020 point guard Hassan Diarra commits to Texas A&M Basketball

Hassan Diarra‍ of Putnam, Connecticut is a 6’2” point guard and the most recent recruit to give his verbal commitment to Buzz Williams and the Texas Aggie basketball program. After taking his final official visit of the recruiting process to Aggieland last weekend, Diarra knew he had found the place to continue his basketball career.

Diarra is the top player in the state of Connecticut and the 64th overall ranked prospect in the class of 2020.

The highly sought after lead guard was heavily recruited by Indiana, Georgia, and others. But after very purposeful and intense recruitment from Buzz and company, the Aggies quickly became the favorite.

Securing a recruit listed with the primary position of point guard is a luxury the Aggies haven’t had in quite some time. Diarra not only a good pick up as one of the country’s top 65 recruits but also because he plays a position in need of depth.

Diarra is a player that can run an offense, break down the defense and get to the basket. He can score in the paint or from the perimeter and knows when to pass to his teammates or get a bucket for himself.

He isn’t an overly athletic player, but he’s strong and has great body control. Diarra can not only handle physical defenders but seems to perform better after contact. He’s a good rebounder at his position and has the tools to be good at the defensive end of the court as well.

For those who have followed Texas A&M basketball since the Melvin Watkins days or before, a similar comparison to Diarra’s style of play would be Bobby Leach.

Bobby Leach started his career with Melvin Watkins but played his final season for Billy Gillispie. Like Leach, Diarra’s outstanding body control and understanding of the game enables him to make plays for his team.

Basketball has come a long way if you can say a guy "isn't particularly athletic" who can spin and dunk at 6'2" and physically built.

I think expected athleticism is roughly what Alex Caruso demonstrated: hop, quickness, and enough upper body strength to go body to body and influence someone driving without fouling.

But the most important attribute is willingness to create and fight for 50-50 balls. Those guys are special.
