Texas A&M's All-Time Depth Chart: Secondary and Special Teams

Throughout its football history Texas A&M has produced a veritable galaxy of celebrated stars.

Some won national awards. Dozens received All-American recognition. Literally hundreds have been named to all-conference teams, some multiple times. A handful never were adequately honored for their accomplishments.

A few of these stars made immediate impacts as freshmen. Some developed into standouts as sophomores or juniors. There were even those that did not emerge until their senior seasons.

They arrived as five-, four-, ,three- or two-star high school recruits. They transferred from other major college programs. They came from junior college.

Some played in the Southwest Conference. Others played in the Big 12 or the Southeastern Conference. They played in the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and into the 2000s.

A number played before platoon football. Some started at one position and moved to another. There were those that excelled on offense, some on defense, some on special teams.

Some were great in college and greater in the pros. Some had long NFL careers. Some had brief tenures as professionals. Some were All-Pros. One was even a Super Bowl MVP.

They were black, white, bi-racial and even Vietnamese. Some were from the inner city. Others were from rural areas. Most were from Texas, though many came from out of state.

Yet, at least one thing they had in common was the fact they were listed high on the depth chart — football’s hierarchy that designates first team, second team and third team.

With that in mind, TexAgs is unveiling in four stages its All-Time Texas A&M football depth chart.

First, we’ll look at offensive skill positions, followed by offensive linemen and tight ends, then defensive front seven and concluding with secondary and special teams.

Of course, when star gazing individuals might focus on different constellations. Check the stars on the TexAgs depth chart to determine if they’d be the stars on yours.

Cornerback (6)

Texas A&M Media Relations

Aaron Glenn was All-Southwest Conference in both his seasons with Texas A&M.

Aaron Glenn (1992-93): All-American. Two-time All-Southwest Conference. Posted nine career interceptions. Creditd with 33 career passes broken up.

Kevin Smith (1988-91): All-American. Three-time All-Southwest Conference. Holds A&M career records with 20 interceptions and with 289 career interception return yards. Shares career interceptions returned for touchdowns record with 3.

Pat Thomas (1972-75): Two-time All-American. Two-time All-Southwest Conference. Posted 13 career interceptions. 

Ray Mickens (1992-95): All-American. Three-time All-Southwest Conference. Posted nine career interceptions. Credited with 28 career passes broken up.

Sammy Davis (1999-2002): All-Southwest Conference. Posted 11 career interceptions. Credited with more than 20 career passes broken up and more than 150 career tackles.

Jason Webster (1996-99): All-American. All-Big 12. Posted 260 career tackles, 7 interceptions and 27 passes broken up.

Safety (6)

Lindsay Caudle, TexAgs

Justin Evans was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dave Elmendorf (1968-70): All-American. Two-time All-Southwest Conference. Posted 12 career interceptions. Led the Aggies in that category two seasons.

Lester Hayes (1973-76): All-American. Two-time All-Southwest Conference. Posted 14 career interceptions, the second-most in school history. Also shares a school record for single-season fumble recoveries with 5.

Patrick Bates (1991-92): All-American. Two-time All-Southwest Conference. In two seasons posted 159 tackles, 6 interceptions and 15 passes broken up.

Tommy Maxwell (1966-68): All-American. All-Southwest Conference. 

Justin Evans (2015-16): All-Southeast Conference. Posted 165 tackles, 5 interceptions and broke up 11 passes in two seasons.

Terrence Kiel (1999-02): All-Big 12. Twice led Aggies in tackles. In final two seasons posted 187 tackles, 4 interceptions and 11 passes broken up.

Kicker (2)

Tony Franklin (1975-78): Two-time All-American. Two-time All-Southwest Conference. Converted 56 career field goals. Holds school record with 3 field goals over 60 yards and 16 over 50 yards.

Randy Bullock (2008-11): All-American. All-Big 12. Groza Award winner. Kicked 63 career field goals. Holds A&M career record with a .788 field goal percentage.

Punter (2)

Matt Sachs, TexAgs

Braden Mann had one of the best seasons ever put together by a punter in college football last year.

Shane Lechler (1996-99): Two-time All-American. Three-time All-Big 12. Averaged 44.7 yards on 268 career punts.

Braden Mann (2016-present): Ray Guy Award winner. All-American. All-Southeastern Conference. Averaged 50.8 yards on 52 career punts. Holds NCAA records for single-game average of 60.8 yards, single-season average of 50.98 and single-season punts of 60 yards or more with 14.

Kick Returner (2)

Leeland McElroy (1993-95): Two-time All-American. Three-time All-Southwest Conference. Averaged 36.6 yards on 30 career kickoff returns. Holds A&M records with 4 career kickoff returns for touchdowns and three returns for touchdowns in one season.

Carl Roaches (1972-75): Averaged 25.3 yards on 43 career kickoff returns.

Punt Returner (2)

Christian Kirk (2015-17): Three-time All-Southeastern Conference. Averaged an A&M record 22.0 yards on 37 career returns. Also holds A&M records for career punt returns for touchdowns with  6 and single-season returns for touchdown with 3.

Yale Lary (1949-51): All-Southwest Conference. Averaged 18.1 yards on 33 career returns.

12th Man

Cullen Gillaspia (2016-18): Posted 25 career tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, blocked two punts with one going for a safety. 

Sam Moeller (2012-15): Posted 45 career tackles, 2 forced fumbles and 2 blocked kicks.
