Aggies overpower Auburn behind Danni Williams' 20 points, 78-59
The No. 14 Aggies followed up Thursday's loss to Tennessee with a dominating 78-59 win over Auburn at Reed Arena.
The Aggies took a 43-25 into halftime, with Chennedy Carter scoring fourteen points. Danni Williams led the first half with five assists. Offensively, Williams and Carter’s chemistry was a force to be reckoned with that Auburn could not stop. Auburn used a full court defensive press against the Aggies, which created some problems at first, however, Williams and Carter were able to create turnovers and capitalize on them. Anriel Howard was dominant in the paint with six rebounds. The Aggies consistently led the Tigers in points and rebounds in the first half.
Danni Williams made a statement in the second half, becoming the 30th Texas A&M women’s basketball player to score 1000 career points. Texas A&M continued to dominate the Tigers in the second half by breaking down their full court press and aggressively winning rebounds on both ends of the court with Howard, Lumpkin and Hillsman leading the way.
Three Aggie players scored in double digits, including Chennedy Charter (23), Danni Williams (20) and Anriel Howard (10), propelling the Aggies to a relatively easy victory. The Aggies scored 18 points on fast breaks and made 72 percent of their free throws. Texas A&M’s ability to capitalize on Auburn’s turnovers was a common theme throughout this match up and was key to its win.
Janiah McKay led the Tigers in scoring and was the main offensive threat to the Aggies. McKay had 16 points and five assists on the afternoon. Abigayle Jackson was close behind McKay with 13 total points. The Tigers attempted to close the gap near the end of the fourth quarter scoring 15 points in the first five minutes but ultimately were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Texas A&M returns to action against Ole Miss this Thursday in College Station at 7pm. The last time these schools matched up the Aggies lost 62-49 in Oxford.
