Jackie Sherrill discusses A&M's hiring of Jimbo Fisher, Darrell Dickey
Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
- You have to put everything in perspective. Kevin Sumlin was a good coach, a good person, but A&M feels like they should and could win a championship. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s the goal of any program. The administration is vital to winning those extra few games.
- The infrastructure is only part of it. There are many things it takes to win a championship. If you have all of them aligned, then it’s easy to win a championship. If you don’t have them then you look around the country at championship-winning schools and realize they have the administration, the faculty, the student body, the former students, the coaches, and they have the media all going in the right direction.
- Coach Fisher is certainly getting a quarterbacks coach with Darrell Dickey. He still has a lot of records at Kansas State. He can relate to players, but he also has a way of getting along with his players. This helps with recruiting and connecting with high school coaches. His dad and brother were great high school coaches in the state of Texas. This is a big plus for Jimbo.
- Jimbo’s contract isn’t solely going to get him recruits. It might get him into a coach's office but that’s not going to get him a recruit, but it can help some. Any publicity is good, unless you’ve done something really wrong. The faculty is really important and nobody really talks about them. If they don’t believe you’re doing the right things with the students then they’re not happy. They help with credibility.
- Coach Dickey was raised in a football coach's home. He played quarterback and was a very successful college player. He understands the chain of command but still has the personality to get along with anybody. He’s just a good ol’ Texas boy, that's the best way to describe him.
