Notes from Billy's breakdown on Kirk

  • At times, you can try to get cute with lists, but Christian Kirk is the best player on this football team without a doubt. This is like trying to debate whether Myles Garrett should’ve been the number one player on the list last year. What he’s been able to do in two years in the SEC has been phenomenal. Not only as a receiver but in the special teams game as well. He’s also doing this playing for so many different quarterbacks and he has still produced at an all-conference level.

  • He’s also the kind of guy you want to have on your football team off the field. With Kirk Merritt leaving, Christian becomes that more important because his backup is now true freshman Roshauud Paul. He is going to be a workhorse for this team. They are going to try and find someone else to return punts in certain games to give Kirk a breather, but Christian will have the ball in his hands in the big moments.

  • There are no negatives about this guy as a football player. I go back to last season with Kirk, the Tennessee and Arkansas games he didn’t do much, but he came on late and made big plays in the big moments. Stating with Alabama, he began to make plays down the field. His second half of the season last year was incredible. He scored against Alabama, Mississippi State, LSU almost everyone, he should’ve thrown a touchdown against Ole Miss as well. You’d love to see him hit that stride early this year, just so many other questions on offense that may hinder that.

  • The problem is Christian can make stuff happen down the field, but you have to have time to throw the football on those plays. If you don’t have confidence upfront, then your looking at a drive killing sack of you call a play like that. That’s what scares me about the early part of the season, how is Mazzone going to find ways to get Christian Kirk the football. They’re going to have to utilize in the horizontal passing game, which isn't ideal, and let him make plays with the football in his hands.
