Longtime Aggie radio voice Dave South retiring from football, basketball

Today Texas A&M announced that Dave South, the voice of Aggie Athletics since 1985, will be stepping down from the Aggie football and men's basketball broadcast booths at the end of the 2017-2018 season.

South will begin his 32nd season as the voice of Aggie Athletics when Texas A&M visits the Rose Bowl on September 3rd against UCLA.

South released a statement with today's announcement:

After discussions that started last August with Texas A&M Ventures and my wife Leanne, I have decided that the 2017 Texas A&M football season and the 2017-18 men’s basketball season will be my last with both teams. I will continue doing play-by-play for the Aggie baseball team on a year-by-year basis.

I read recently "God assigns certain jobs for certain times. While it’s important to respond obediently, it’s also vital we understand when an assignment is finished. Diligence and job completion honor the Lord, but resistance to change and refusal to let go can hinder His plan."(Journey, June 15, 2017, page 23)

The 2017-18 season will mark my 47th year in collegiate broadcasting, and I just celebrated my 72nd birthday. There will be many people to thank as we make our way through this coming year. I will start with coach Jackie Sherrill and the late Ralph Carpenter, who extended the offer to be the voice of the Aggies prior to the 1985 season. My association with Texas A&M University and its athletics department has truly been a blessing. The friendships made and the joy of broadcasting Aggie games have made my years here unforgettable.

I’m also honored to have worked with every entity that has held the broadcast rights to Texas A&M athletics. For those of you who have been around for a long time, you will understand this statement: I am the last of the Southwest Conference Exxon announcers still active in sports broadcasting.

To the coaches, athletes, staff and athletic directors, our experiences together over these many years have created a lifetime of wonderful memories. If memories were memorabilia, there wouldn’t be a room big enough to hold my collection.

To the Aggies and radio listeners who have been so gracious and kind for these many years, thank you for your words, texts, emails, and letters. I am humbled by your thoughtful generosity.

Knowing God has a plan for every day of our lives, Leanne and I look forward to the future.

Since he began calling Aggie events in 1985, South's distinct voice has narrated many of Texas A&M's greatest athletic feats. From John Byington's two-homerun performance against Texas and the birth of Olsen Magic, to "He got a touchdown," in the 1998 Big XII championship game victory over Kansas State, Johnny Manziel's run to the Heisman Trophy in 2012 and everything in between.

No announcement has been made on who will replace South in handling the football and basketball play-by-play duties moving forward.

"Long snap count, that guy goes in motion, here's the snap...drops back...looking...looking...throwing....endzone!!....and they're gonna get a sack back at the 14 yardline."

We all love to poke fun at him here, but he really is one of the nicest people on campus. If you ever get the chance to stop and talk sports with Dave, do it.

"And the Longhorns line up at their own 30 yard line and here's the snap and looks like a run in the middle...he's all locked up and he's struggling to get back to the line of scrimmage and, wait, oh my lands, I was watching the wrong player guys, the Horns scored. 70 yard run on the ground for a Horns TD. Well how about that?!"

There are only a few ways to honor Dave South, and one of them is to repost the epic "Dave South Casserole" post from many years ago.

Quote:

Through careful scientific research, I discovered that Dave has many "modes".

Sometimes, Dave goes into what I call "Yoda Dave Mode" where he inverts sentences.
Example:
Dave: "So to the 35-yard line go the Aggies", or "he caught the ball, did Murf".

Then you have "Non-Normal Reaction Dave", like others have mentioned above.
Example:
Dave: "So it'll be 3rd and 9 for the Bears. Hand-off to the fullback who dives across the line and falls down".
Everyone listening at home: "YES, we stopped them!!"
Dave: "And so that'll be a 17-yard pick-up".
Everyone listening at home: "HUH?! You said he 'dove' across the line and went down! Jesus, Dave, "dove" means he barely got anything!!!".

Then there is "Future-Tense Dave". Even after a play has happened, everything is described in the future tense.
Example:
Dave (after a play has just ended and everyone is on their way back to the huddle): "So Courtney will run for 5 yards".
Or Dave (after a long drive for a TD): "So the Ags will take the ball 75 yards in 11 plays and score a TD".

Every once in awhile it all comes together in one "Classic Dave Casserole" playcall:
"So it's slot left hash right man in motion is that Riley? might be Murf. Roll right will Reggie, needs 8 yards for the first gets past one man gets past another NICE move down the sideline aaaaaaaaand dragged down from behind for a 6 yard loss. Punt will the Aggies".

Nice guy. I wish him the best. He truly became one of us and immersed in Aggieism. (Is that a word?)
.
As for his ability to describe what was happening on the field, he lasted way too long.
.
Nevertheless, we love you Dave. All the best.

I like a bunch of people who think every play is an option shortside critiquing Dave's ability to call games. The radio broadcasts did get harder to follow after a time, but that coincided with the AD jamming the broadcasts with more commercials, sponsorships, and those ridiculous "shot outs." Dave was great when he was allowed to just call the games.
