Kevin Smith talks Cowboys loss and the need to want to play at A&M

Key notes from Kevin Smith interview

  • They didn't play Dak a whole lot and Zeke didn't play at all in the last game of the regular season. That's three weeks without playing for those guys. I was afraid they would come out flat, and that's what happened. The game could have been completely different if we came out of the tunnel playing a whole lot better.

  • 35 seconds was way too much time for Aaron Rodgers at the end of the game. He's right there with Brady in terms of tops in the league. He made a big play and it was a great catch and great kick to win the game.

  • The future is bright for the Dallas Cowboys. We do some meet and greets with fans and I told Coach Campo that you're seeing some of the same development we had in the 1990s. They can go into the draft next year and figure out what they need and what they want. They are buying into the system and are doing what they are asked to do.

  • A&M has to continue to work and believe in the system. Coach Chavis has been proven to field top defenses and I'm not sure if he has all the players he wants to plug in right now.

  • The culture in Aggieland is what we dreamed about and why we committed to play there back when I was playing. When I played, guys were sitting at the back door crying if they had to leave A&M. Normally it was because of grades, but they didn't want to leave A&M. They weren't talking about transferring and leaving school early. They were trying to make the most of what that school had to offer. What bothers me the most is seeing these guys leave and transfer.

  • When I played, it didn't matter if you were first, third or fourth team, you didn't leave Texas A&M. I don't know if being a Texas Aggie is that important to these guys. If it's not that important then that's when you have to start getting guys who really want to be there and be a part of it.

Hate the boys with a passion. But had to secretly root for them when he played. I remember one year they're played both the Giants and Jets, and he got a pick six in both games. In the Jet game he ran straight through the endzone and handed the ball to a marine standing nearby. What a guy!
