The Texas A&M men’s golf team rounded out the fall portion of their season with a fifth place finish at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in Alpharetta, Georgia. The Aggies have placed fifth or higher in all four tournaments so far this season, including two second-place finishes and a third-place finish.

The field at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate was extremely competitive, featuring 14 of the 17 teams ranked in the top 33 of the GolfStat national collegiate rankings.

Texas A&M finished at -6 (291-285-282=858), just two shots off of the lead, behind Texas and Virginia who shared the championship at -8. The Aggies finished one shot behind USC and Stanford, who each finished at -7 on the tournament.

“I am really pleased with the way that we have finished so far this fall,” Coach JT Higgins said. "This was the best tournament that we will play in all year.

“Our guys took on an extremely strong field, and they played their hearts out and gave everything they had until the last putt was made.”

To go along with the stellar team play from A&M, Chandler Phillips finished the tournament at -6, solidifying his third top-five finish of the fall. That score of -6 earned Phillips a fourth-place finish among the stacked field in Alpharetta.

Phillips previously notched his first career collegiate victory at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

“Chandler has had an amazing year so far,” said Higgins. "He has won a tournament and is establishing himself as one of best players in the country.

"He comes to play every single time in every tournament. He is growing and maturing on the golf course, and he is certainly one of the leaders of this team.”

Freshman Viraj Madappa concluded the tournament with a share of 16th place after shooting -1 (75-71-69=215). The -1, 16th place finish marks Madappa’s best individual finish of the season this fall.

Junior Cameron Champ ended the tournament tied for 39th after shooting a +4 (72-70-78=220), and junior Kavan Eubank shot a +5 (73-75-73=221), finishing closely behind Champ. Sophomore Brandon Smith rounded out the Aggies' individual finishers with a 56th-place finish, shooting a +7 (75-78-70=223) in Georgia over the weekend.

The Aggies have started the fall on a tear on the team and individual leaderboards. A&M has finished in the top five in every tournament this fall and has seen a top-five individual finisher in every tournament that they have participated in this fall. Also, the Aggies have produced an individual tournament winner in three of four tournaments.

“I couldn’t be happier with where we are at as a team,” said Higgins. "One of our goals is to be in the final group in the last day of any tournament that we play in, and we have been able to do that.”

“The only disappointment so far has been not winning a tournament outright. We have beaten a lot of great teams. Our best golf is ahead of us, and we are looking forward to competing for an SEC championship and more. I am excited to see what we can accomplish this spring.”
