On Jazzmin Babers…

“She just has a really vibrant personality. She is involved in so many things around campus, has friends in every sport and just a likeable energetic kid and brings that to the court as well. She has been in a lot of leadership organizations and that has really helped her take the team and really influence them in a lot of positive ways. She is a joy to be around, has a hilarious laugh that makes everyone laugh when she does her famous laugh. She is a bright kid, an energetic kid like I’ve said and just a really ambitious person.”

On improvement in serving and mental toughness…

“I think we are getting better. Actually, I know we are getting better. Our mental toughness is lacking in particular in the beginning of the match. We have people coming at us because we are the defending champs and we are picked to win so teams give us their biggest and best effort in the first 30 minutes and try to set a tone and we didn’t handle it that well at first, but we are getting a little bit better at expecting that and knowing how to respond. Our serving is improving. It’s still not where we are moving up in the charts in aces per set at all but we are getting better at a little bit more pace and a little bit more accurate with our locations. We really strategically serve rather than serve for power. As both of those things improve slowly they are really helping carrying over into the rest of our game.”

On being picked to win the SEC and any additional pressure that might bring…

“I think so. I think the team knows it and feels it and I think they actually want to be known as the former champions and the champions in waiting kind of. They want that but I think learning how to handle it was the issue and I’m not sure we have that completely down. We haven’t really played the toughest part of our schedule yet in conference so improving right now is necessary but it’s not as challenging as it will be in the next few weeks. I think we are improving in those two areas as well as understanding what each player needs to just enhance their game a little bit more on the court because we were having some times where one error would lead to another by another teammate and just kind of snowball. I think they are really trying to figure out how to prevent that from happening.”

On playing three away matches in a row…

“We feel like we are just supposed to be playing on the road all the time now. We are pretty well road tested and personally I like it. I like being on the road with the team when you have opportunities to get into the gym and prepare without all the distractions of being at home. So I think it really has been good to us for the most part. At Ole Miss in particular we have struggled there the past two seasons. We have gone 1-5 but really close sets. They have hitters that are really really talented and have big arms. If you don’t have a very disciplined block and defense then no matter where they swing it can ricochet off the bleachers if that’s how hard they hit it. We just have to be so disciplined in what they do especially at the net against them. It’s a new facility we are playing at in an big arena so we have a lot of question marks about how it will be when we go over there, but I think knowing how it ends a very important road streak for us and we want to finish our road streak successfully, I think that’s going to propel us to victory.”
