Texas A&M soccer grinds out double overtime draw with Missouri, 1-1
Following a three-game losing streak, Texas A&M soccer desperately needed a win over the Missouri Tigers.
An early goal gave the Aggies the lead for 85 minutes of play. It was not until the final five minutes of the game that Mizzou was able to respond to the Aggies with a goal of their own, ultimately causing the game to end in a draw, 1-1.
The draw brings Texas A&M's current record to 7-5-1.
"I'm disappointed that we gave that [goal] up," Coach G. Guerrieri said. "It's unfortunate this young team is learning some really hard lessons."
Despite giving up a goal late in the game, the Aggies' certainly started the game strong.
Just over one minute into the game, Mikaela Harvey found teammate Grace Piper in the midfield. Capitalizing on a small opening, Piper took a shot from 40 yards out and slid a ground ball into the lower right corner the Tigers' net. The goal was Piper's third of the season.
The goal lit a fire in the Mizzou players, and they never once took their foot off the gas. Throughout the duration of the game, the Tigers took 23 shots, 16 corner kicks and 15 free kicks.
"Dani made countless game-changing saves," McKayla Paulson said.
"She's so solid for us back there. We depend on her so much. She's a great rock.
"I thought overall our defense played great. Our whole team played really well," she added.
After 85 minutes of play, Missouri was finally able to break through the Aggie defense.
After a confused cluster of players formed in front of the Texas A&M goal, Tiger Midfielder Kaitlyn Clark drew the ball out of the group. Clark found teammate Allie Hess in front of the Aggie goal. Hess took a shot from 10 yards out and slid the ball just underneath a diving Danielle Rice, planting the ball in the back of the net.
The goal put the Tigers on the board. Texas A&M didn't have time to respond, and the game was forced into overtime.
Throughout the two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team was able to make good on a shot, and the game ended in a draw, 1-1.
The Aggies hit the road this weekend to take on Tennessee in Knoxville on Sunday at 4pm.
