Aggie men's golf finishes third overall at Fighting Illini Invitational
After a second place finish in their season-opening tournament, the Texas A&M men’s golf team was back in action over the weekend in Olympia Fields, Illinois in the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational.
After sitting near the top of the team leaderboard for the first two rounds of play, the Aggies finished third overall.
The Aggies shot a combined 280-295-289=864, finishing at +24 for the tournament behind the second-place Oklahoma State Cowboys, +18, and the tournament hosts, the Illinois Fighting Illini, who finished on top at +5.
“We don’t have to play perfect golf, but we have to finish our rounds," said A&M head men’s golf coach JT Higgins. "We had a legitimate chance to win at Olympia Fields, but we have to play all 18 holes, which can be tough mentally but we have the talent to do that.”
Although the Aggies did not finish atop the team leaderboard, Texas A&M junior Cameron Champ from Sacramento, Calif., shot a final-round 69, which included four birdies, to secure his first individual collegiate victory.
Champ finished five strokes under par on the tournament and went wire-to-wire as the leader, shooting a tournament-low 65 in the first round, immediately throwing himself to the top of the leaderboard.
“He was in complete control this weekend, which was no surprise, and he has been dominating at home and is turning into who we thought he would.”
The rest of the team fared well, too.
Coming off of a second place finish, Aggie sophomore Chandler Phillips finished in the top-20 for the second tournament in a row. Phillips finished the Fighting Illini Invitational at +5, which landed him tied for 17th.
Freshman Viraj Madappa of Kolkata, India, shot a final round 73 and ended up tied for 33rd place, finishing the tournament at +10.
Coming off of a victory in the Turning Stone – Tiger Intercollegiate, Texas A&M junior Kavan Eubank followed his first victory as an Aggie with a 45th place finish, ending the tournament at +14 after shooting 74-76-74=224.
Sophomore Max Miller finished with a share of 66th place after shooting a 78-76-76 for a total of 231, concluding the tournament at +21.
“I haven’t been this excited in a while about a team,” said Higgins. ”We are solid in the one through four spots, but we are still looking for a fifth guy to step up, and there are a bunch of talented golfers who can do that.”
The Aggies have produced an individual winner in both of the tournaments so far in the 2016-2017 season, and have finished third or better in both tournaments, as well. A&M will be back in action September 30th in the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.
