Texas A&M names Trevor Knight starting quarterback for UCLA game
Coach Kevin Sumlin broke from his usual protocol and named senior Trevor Knight Texas A&M’s starting quarterback over junior Jake Hubenak on Monday.
The announcement means the Aggies know their starting quarterback before August for the first time since Johnny Manziel’s sophomore season in 2013.
“Trevor Knight will be our starter,” Sumlin said in a news release from the A&M Sports Information Department. “His on-field performance this spring along with his leadership earned him the starting job.”
Knight had an impressive performance in A&M’s Maroon & White spring football game on Saturday. He was credited with completing 25 of 36 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown.
However, he also completed a pass to Trayveon Williams for a 43-yard gain that was originally listed as a running play.
In previous years Sumlin had waited until about two weeks before the season opener to name a starting quarterback. He waited until late August to name Johnny Manziel over Jameill Showers in 2012, Kenny Hill over Kyle Allen in 2014 and Allen over Kyler Murray last year.
When Knight starts the season-opener against UCLA on Sept. 3 it will mark the seventh consecutive season the Aggies opened the season with a different starter, although that’s because Manziel was suspended for the first half of the 2013 opener against Rice.
Also, it marks the A&M’s fourth different starting quarterback in its last five games.
Knight, a San Antonio native, came to A&M as a graduate transfer from Oklahoma.
He was named the Most Valuable Player of the Sooners’ 45-31 victory over Alabama in the 2014 Sugar Bowl. In that game Knight passed for 348 yards and four touchdowns.
Then in the 2014 season he completed 179 of 316 passes for 2,300 yards and 14 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also rushed 68 times for 339 yards and five touchdowns.
However, he lost the starting job to Baker Mayfield last season. In a reserve role, Knight passed for 305 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Sumlin gave no indication that he had made up his mind after the spring game. He even said he had no set time to announce a starting quarterback.
“I haven’t thought about it since I walked off the field,” Sumlin said when asked about the quarterback competition on Saturday. “I’ll give it some thought. I have to watch video. I had the worst seat in the house. We’ll see.
“We’ll evaluate where they are. We’ll have our own timeline for that.”
Obviously, the timeline was much sooner than in previous years.
