NASHVILLE - Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Kennedy, who guided the Aggies to their first conference championship in 30 years, was rewarded on Saturday with announcement of a pending new five-year contract.

Terms of the agreement were not announced. The contract must be approved by the A&M Board of Regents.

Kennedy is 96-68 in five seasons at A&M.

I am blessed to be coaching such a fine group of young men at an outstanding university. We still have a lot of work left to do this season, and I look forward to leading the Aggies for many years. - Billy Kennedy {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"left","Quote":"I am blessed to be coaching such a fine group of young men at an outstanding university. “This new contract and commitment is well-deserved and well-earned by Billy, who is a great ambassador for Texas A&M and who embodies our values,” Athletic Director Scott Woodward said in the news released issued by the A&M Sports Information Department. “He has led our team to Texas A&M’s first conference championship in 30 years, with an NCAA Tournament invitation likely to come on Sunday. Our program is also achieving success in the classroom and in the community. We hope that Billy is leading our program for a long time to come.”

A&M (25-7) plays LSU at noon Saturday in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament.

The Aggies reached at high as No. 5 in the national rankings this season and are projected as a No. 4-seed in next week’s NCAA Tournament.

“I am extremely appreciative of the support and confidence that Texas A&M has demonstrated to me and our staff,” Kennedy said in the release. “This has been a team effort, and I am blessed to be coaching such a fine group of young men at an outstanding university. We still have a lot of work left to do this season, and I look forward to leading the Aggies for many years.”

I tried to submit an open records request twice but both times I did it took me back to the login page.

Edit - At work and got caught up both times so it must have timed out. Successfully submitted now. I'll let you guys know if and when I hear anything.

The only two coaches officially under contract as of 7/6/2016 are Kennedy and Abdul-Rahim and their 2014 contracts are still currently in effect. I got the full text of both. Will add details here later.

Yep. Figured that's what you'd get at this point. They've gotten pretty good about hiding these things for as long as possible.

Yeah. I was a bit surprised that nothing came up on Maligi or Chew considering how long they've been on staff. Not as much surprised regarding Kennedy's not being finalized yet.

Nothing in either contract really surprised me but I did find the specific terms very interesting, including Kennedy's perks.

Kennedy:

  • $500K base to coach - gets paid out monthly
  • $500K additional to represent the university at different things - gets paid out each September
  • Not less than 6 football tickets to every Texas A&M football game (doesn't specify just home games), as well as one VIP parking pass for home games.
  • Not less than 12 basketball tickets to every basketball game
  • Use of two cars
  • Country club membership
  • 2 VIP parking passes to each home game
  • Cell phone
  • Reimbursement for travel activities or functions that his wife attends to represent A&M
  • $41,667 for conference regular season or tournament champion
  • $41,667 for NCAA appearance
  • $41,667 for Sweet 16 appearance
  • $41,667 for Final 4 appearance
  • $41,667 for national champion
  • $20,834 for NIT semi-finals

Buy-out clause:

  • If terminated on or after 5/16/14 but before 5/15/15, $83,334 per month each month through May 15,2015 and $62,500 per month each month from May 16, 2015 through May 15, 2016
  • If terminated on or after May 15, 2015, but before May 15, 2016, $83,334 per month each month through May 15, 2016
  • No obligation for any payment if terminated after May 15, 2016

Termination by Kennedy

  • If he terminates agreement prior to the last game of the 2015-2016 season (including any post-season games) and accepts other employment as a coach, scout, or consultant for a basketball organization (paraphrasing) prior to MAy 15, 2016, he must pay A&M $500K within the 90 days.

Amir:

  • $200K salary
  • Use of a car
  • Cell phone
  • No buy out clause or penalty for leaving

FOIA improve the ability of the media and individuals to oversee the government. Shirking that responsibility is ethically wrong and morally suspect. And I say that after living in a nation as a teenager with rampant corruption.

Woodward: don't do this. Man up and be transparent. President Young: really??

I'm going to take a little less pessimistic view and assume that the details of Kennedy's and assistant coaches new contracts are still being ironed out. Will submit another request in a month or two.

How much any of our coaches make has generally been irrelevant to me. If Kennedy was making $1 a year but losing games, I would want him fired regardless of the bargain rate. And if he was consistently winning a lot then pay him a trillion for all I care. Whatever, it all is just Monopoly money to me personally and in a sports world where a guy like Delladova is now signing a $50 million contract, I no longer try making any sense of coaching or player salaries.

It's only relevant in the dialogue of potentially being able to get rid of coaches and hiring new ones.

I'd like to see how committed we really are to him with the new contract.

The last reporting was it was on the agenda for a BoR. if it was approved, while there might be more negotiation, that could be disclosed.

I don't care from an athletics performance viewpoint. I care because we are a nation of laws and following the spirit as well as text of the law is important especially when it takes a private citizen to REQUEST disclosure.

My request was specific to contracts currently in place

FWIW, his previous contract was signed on October 14, 2014 and was in the news already on September 3, 2014.

Thank you for acknowledging the general shape of the kind of concern this raises. But is there a reverse in dates or are you saying the announcement of terms preceded the signing of the contract?

News reports that an extension had been agreed to came out on September 3rd but all they contained was that the deal had been extended two years. Didn't have any other contractual details. The contract was signed on October 14th but the start date of the contract was actually September 1st. I assume they had been operating under the contract without it being signed in that interim period. Assume the same is going on currently or maybe the new contracts just haven't made it into the system yet.
