Texas A&M Basketball reaches highest ranking in program history

Another 2-0 week, another jump in the polls. Just casual business in the world of Texas A&M Basketball, right? Not when both major polls rank the Aggies No. 5 — the highest such honor in program history.

Another 2-0 week, another jump in the polls.

Just casual business in the world of Texas A&M Basketball, right?

Not when both major polls rank the Aggies No. 5 — a first in the history of the program.

In the latest Associated Press basketball poll, released Monday, A&M (17-2, 7-0 SEC) moved from its prior ranking of No. 10 up to No. 5 (No. 5!) after defeating SEC foes LSU and Missouri by double-digits during the week. That officially represents the highest AP ranking Texas A&M has achieved.

The USA Today Coaches poll bumped the Aggies from No. 8 to No. 5 — also the program's highest-ever ranking in the Coaches.

Oklahoma remained at the No. 1 in the AP despite its loss to Iowa State, followed by North Carolina, Iowa and Kansas. Villanova, Xavier and Maryland followed A&M at Nos. 6, 7 and 8 in the AP poll.

Indeed, we now live in a world where Billy Kennedy's Aggies are ranked higher than Mark Turgeon's Terrapins.

Another big week awaits the Ags, who head to Fayetteville on Wednesday to face Arkansas (9-10, 3-4) and then return home Saturday for a sellout contest at Reed Arena against No. 14 Iowa State (15-4, 4-3 Big 12).

A&M previously defeated Big 12 opponents Texas, Kansas State and Baylor all by 10 or more points.

Against the Cyclones, the Ags will look for a clean sweep.
