BREAKING: Elijah Thomas to transfer away from Texas A&M

Elijah Thomas, from Lancaster high school, has decided to transfer out of the Texas A&M basketball program.

The 6-9 freshman power forward was part of the Aggies' most heralded recruiting class in recent history and showed a lot of promise in his future.

However, the start to Thomas' collegiate career was a rocky one; his very short time with Texas A&M has been riddled with injury.

During the team's foreign tour in the summer, Thomas had to sit out two games because he stepped on a sea urchin in the ocean, resulting in a gash on his foot. Then, once the official practices for the season began, Elijah suffered a minor concussion and was forced to the sidelines for a week.

After being cleared for all workouts, the big man injured his foot and was again forced to sit and watch his teammates for another four weeks.

Thomas, who was the most highly rated recruit in the 2015 class, has seen very limited minutes in the first eight games due to all of his setbacks so early. But the setbacks weren't the only reason for Thomas' limited minutes.

After missing five weeks of practice and the emergence of Tyler Davis and Tonny Trocha-Morelos in the post, Thomas found himself deeper on the bench than anyone would have guessed in the preseason.

The Lancaster product didn't mature on the court as quickly as the coaches or he would have liked. In my opinion, his skill level and talent are ready for this level, but his preparation and mental adjustments aren't.

When sharing minutes between the post players, this isn't a huge loss, although Thomas would have certainly helped toward the end of the year. But where this becomes a factor is for the 2016-2017 season.

Thomas is the type of talent that has the potential to play at the next level. His ability to score the basketball in a multitude of ways, combined with his athleticism, is something the A&M fan base has not seen in a maroon and white jersey in a long time.

The Aggies started the season with more depth at the post than most of the teams they will face, but with the deflection of Thomas, Kennedy and company are down a scholarship player that could have potentially grown into a big-time force by the end of the season.

Whether at the end of this year or looking ahead to next season, a roster that would have consisted of Tyler Davis, Tonny Trocha-Morelos, Thomas, Tavario Miller and Robert Williams — the incoming freshman from Louisiana — would be more intimidating and intriguing than one without Thomas suiting up.

Now, Billy Kennedy and company will have to rely on Davis and Trocha (which is proving to be a good combination) as starters, with Tavario Miller and Robert Williams coming off the bench next season.

So, just so we are clear, when a story is being reported on by Texags, we can assume that it is an extension of the athletic department's media relations group?

Logan you're just falling victim to an overall sentiment that Texags is becoming too reliant on being a press arm of the University and not willing to rock the boat by calling out bad performance.
I understand that people may have this thought process and I'm fine with them thinking that. It's their opinion and I highly doubt I can change that opinion. BUT, I just wanted to make sure he knew my reasoning.

I knew about what was going on but I also felt that Elijah would come to his senses and make the right decision, which is why I didn't want to stir the pot or add fuel to any rumors.

The reason I thought he would make the decision to not transfer is simple: He missed five (5) weeks of practice and has truly only worked out during four weeks out of the nine weeks of practice this year. After suffering a broken foot and a concussion and missing more than 50% of practice time, AND with Tyler Davis and Tonny Trocha playing well, why would anyone think they deserve to play more minutes than the guys who have been there every day and are playing well???

Again, that's my thought process and you (as in everyone on this website) can take it for what you think it's worth.

Because he has probably been told how awesome he is since upper elementary school, and I'm sure he has been surrounded by people his whole life reaffirming that sentiment. Hell, our coaches probably did the same in recruiting. What choice did they have? So, when adversity hits, the player bails instead of facing it. It's so laughable to me. This is mental weakness. No way around it.

I can certainly appreciate your point of view and far be it from me to tell you how to do your job, but I am only speaking from our perspective as fans. I just felt that referencing the presser, then regurgitating BK's answer was a bit insulting to the caller as well as the listeners. If you were not comfortable adding anything, why not just say so? Especially since Hop had already stated Sunday that word was coming early this week, which did not seem to hurt the situation at all.

And also, while I appreciate the perspective you bring as a former player, I do think that the coach in you affects your coverage of the team. Let's face it: for those of us who love Aggie hoops Texags is our only source for inside info. If Texags is just going to reiterate what has already been publicly stated by the coaching staff then there is no value added to the consumer whatsoever.

Based on Logan's responses on this thread I think that restating the official statement was the right move. He doesn't force the transfer that way. He also protects his relationship so he can bring you other pertinent information. The only thing you lost was a few hours of complaining. Seems like a savvy move to me.

Clearly the wrong decision based on the penultimate sentence...

I don't mind you asking why I said what I said, but the last sentence of your post is completely off base. Would you rather have insight from a guy who never played the game or never went through the battles at this level? Would you rather learn about the team from a guy who the staff doesn't trust or talk to at all? I actually have a completely different outlook because of my background. I've been on both sides of the fence. I've played basketball at the college level. I've coached basketball at the college level. And I've covered collegiate basketball in the media. My thought process is certainly different but that's because I look at every situation from all angles.
Gabe and Billy's responses to criticism of commentary on the Kyle Allen transfer, in which they were both very very critical of A&M, I think, are worth the read if you have not read them, Logan. Particularly Gabe's, where he was pretty adamant that TexAgs is a different organization and entity as Texas A&M and its not TexAgs' job to be an extension of Texas A&M.

I understand there is a balance to be struck, but make sure to strike it in the right place.

The rest of that is a weird way to respond to criticism about regurgitating public information that my chubby 13 year old cousin who doesn't know what a basketball is could have regurgitated.
