Thoughts on Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen's decision to transfer

December 10, 2015
297,519

On Thursday Texas A&M announced sophomore starting quarterback Kyle Allen will transfer.

This is something that came across my desk earlier this afternoon and I've spent a couple of hours thinking about the ramifications of the former five-star quarterback and Aggie starter leaving A&M after two seasons.

Out of respect for Kyle, I didn't break the news because he needed to be prepared for the onslaught that was going to come when Sumlin and A&M eventually put out the official, carefully worded and clean and sanitary press release.

Here's the bottom line truth: the Aggies lost a quarterback today that we'll probably see slinging passes in the National Football League in two or three years. More importantly, they lost a guy who probably would have stayed on campus had there been any degree of certainty regarding the direction of the A&M offense or the status of his position coach, an assistant who spent two years recruiting him and also happens to remain on board as the offensive coordinator.

This doesn't have to do with Kyler Murray or the fact that Allen was caught in the middle of a back-and-forth battle between two very talented and very decorated young quarterbacks. In my opinion, it has everything to do with instability on that side of the ball and Allen doing what he believed was best for his future.

Look, we all assumed that the very real possibility existed that either Allen or Murray would transfer following this season. Even if Allen reclaiming the starting job led to a flicker of hope that Kyle would stay on board and Murray would see how baseball went this spring before re-evaluating where he stood in the pecking order, the reality was that one of the two were likely to leave.

Alex Parker, TexAgs The uncertainty revolving around Jake Spavital and how to fix Texas A&M's offense was likely a big factor in Kyle Allen's decision.
The uncertainty revolving around Jake Spavital and how to fix Texas A&M's offense was likely a big factor in Kyle Allen's decision.
The guy walking out the door, as it turns out, just so happens to be the most proven and experienced signal-caller on the Aggie roster and, truth be told, the one who was most likely to nab the starting job in 2016 with Murray spending the spring on the diamond for Rob Childress' potential College World Series squad.

There's no way to spin nor sugarcoat the Ags losing Allen, folks, and quite frankly, I have neither the desire nor inclination to do so.

The fact is, the situation at quarterback has been handled poorly from the start and came to a head this afternoon. If Kevin Sumlin doesn't rectify whatever is going on with the Aggie offense and do so quickly, things are going to get much worse before they get better.

What do I mean? I know for a fact that rival coaches are having an absolute field day on the recruiting front when meeting with and talking to A&M commits and priority targets, pointing to a lack of production in 2015 and the ensuing uncertainty and dysfunction.

There's also the "little" things like where Murray's head is at in all of this (I've heard from more than one college coach in this state that Murray, in fact, is also strongly considering a transfer), the fact that a guy like SEC Freshman of the Year Christian Kirk just so happens to be Allen's best friend and the Ags' ongoing recruiting efforts in regard to the Class of 2016.

As of today, the Aggies desperately need to add a quarterback to this year's class and it appears they will begin that search about ten months too late with a position coach/OC whose status moving forward is very much up in the air.

Sometimes, the truth hurts. And the truth today is that the A&M offense has taken steps backward every year since Sumlin's first in College Station in 2012. In four years in Aggieland, the A&M offense has been led by three different OCs and that number could grow to four in five years prior to next season.

It was Sumlin who created what appears to be a mix on his offensive staff that, at best, doesn't mesh well in terms of scheme and philosophy or, at worst, lacks any degree of real chemistry and cohesion. After all, we're talking about a unit that had not one, not two, but three OCs in the room this past season. In my humble opinion, Allen recognized as much and decided to pursue his football dreams elsewhere.

So, here we sit today. There's one man who can fix things.

He did it a year ago on the defensive side of the ball and things look as promising for the Wrecking Crew today under John Chavis as they did at any point since R.C. Slocum was patrolling the Kyle Field sidelines. I know you guys want me to be the one with all of the answers but, quite frankly, I don't know the best course of action for the head coach.

As you know, my job is to get you the information. Sumlin gets paid the big bucks to serve as the top-of-the-chain problem-solver for Texas A&M Football. I can opine all I want, but what I don't know is whether the answer is making a change at the top (offensive coordinator) or shaking things up elsewhere on that side of the ball. That's for the head man to decide, even it's an unpopular choice.

The first order of business for Sumlin is stepping back and taking an honest look at where the system is flawed and getting to the absolute root of the problem. I can only assume that the head coach has been doing this for at least two weeks, if not much longer than that.
quote
right
The first order of business for Sumlin is stepping back and taking an honest look at where the system is flawed and getting to the absolute root of the problem. What I do know, however, is that this thing has drug out too long and is clearly having a negative effect on the current Aggie players and program momentum — in the locker room and in the recruiting arena — in general.

The first order of business for Sumlin is stepping back and taking an honest look at where the system is flawed and getting to the absolute root of the problem. I can only assume that the head coach has been doing this for at least two weeks, if not much longer than that. And while I'll be the first to offer the man the benefit of the doubt, anything short of him having whatever replacements he has in place and ready to step into the breach when they are freed up to do so is beyond the realm of acceptable.

Even then, you'd think there would be some type of move made, some sort of press release or a pre-bowl press conference designed to put out the fire of uncertainty that is dangerously close to burning out of control.

This isn't Sumlin taking his time to find the absolute best fit at defensive coordinator even if it meant losing Malik Jefferson to Texas — which, in all fairness, worked out brilliantly.

A year ago, he removed Mark Snyder shortly after the season finale and got the search underway. In this instance, the lack of any news or movement has led to a cloud hanging over the program during a crucial time in the recruiting cycle and probably played a role in Allen's ultimate decision.

There are a lot of players and assistants twisting in the wind right now and there are a lot of recruits who read the message boards and are much more social media-savvy than you and I, waiting to see which direction the Aggie head coach goes with an offense that ranked among the nation's most feared and explosive units as recently as two years ago.

Don't get it twisted — it's not Kevin Sumlin's job to tell me, you or even the biggest-money donor out there what he plans to do. He's paid $5M a year to make the final call on what's best for Aggie Football.

Last year, that meant keeping everyone in the dark before ripping John Chavis away from LSU. Pardon me for saying so, but things just don't seem nearly as clearly-orchestrated this time around.

Here's hoping Sumlin already knows the answer to the question everyone, including his former starting quarterback, is asking.

Overly dramatic? I don't think so at all.

Raise your hand if you wear an Aggie Ring and aren't concerned.

It's time to move or from Sumlin.

These kinds of things don't happen to championship coaches. This has been handled terribly. We don't need to squander anymore talent waiting for Sumlin to get it right.

This is all Sumlin. Way over his head from the very beginning. But everyone here already knows that. Best article ever written by Looch and will definitely stir things up among the power brokers.

Sumlin allowing Allen to die against Ole Miss surely was the final nail. That was an assassination.

Man, I am totally shocked as well Billy. I sure hope Kyler doesn't transfer.

I think this goes back to the Ole Miss game. 22 consecutive non-productive passes, and they left him out there, and then threw him under the bus. Kyle held the ball too long, didn't protect it well at times, and struggled against elite competition. But he was by far our best QB when healthy.

We will see who the (hopefully) new OC is & how KM does, but this feels worse than the lowest Fran years. I think it's because we are stuck w/this garbage for years.

I'm sad he is leaving because he would be our best option next year if healthy.

That said, he also seemed a bit whiny and I don't agree with those saying we will see him throwing it on Sundays. He may get to the league but I don't see him playing. Maybe he gets a consistent back up gig.

The problem is SUMLIN is the root of the problem.

Looking more like this may be accurate.

I'll join the collective speculation in this thread by suggesting that Kyle and his parents probably did not make the decision capriciously. They likely had a serious discussion with Sumlin regarding the future of the offense and the OC position, and then concluded the situation was not going to improve for Kyle.

The seeds for this debacle were sown when Sumlin agreed to Kyler's/his dad's demands that he not be redshirted. Kyler may well have gone to tu without Sumlin's acquiescence, and I strongly suspect it was used as leverage with Sumlin. Unless Kyler now transfers to tu, we won't know how his signing there would have worked out in the long-term, for us or tu. Moreover, the seeds were fertilized during the disastrous handling of the QB situation and Sumlin's dishonesty during that period.

Now, the offensive side of the ball is in substantial disarray, and it could compromise the entire program. At least at the moment, it is a **** show.

Honestly the qb controversy should be over now and maybe the team can move on. Rally around whoever the starter is going to be for the bowl game. We will see in 2+ weeks.

Hard to know for sure but I hope Kds learned a lesson. Maybe be happy with one 5* qb at a time.

If Kyler continues to demonstrate the same durability, your starting QB is a juco transfer. Nice work.

We are big Kyle Allen fans at our house, we are all heartbroken at the news. My husband's first thoughts were all about the lack of offensive line, lack of an OC, etc. All those things that have been hashed and rehashed. My first thought was don't discount the influence of the high school girlfriend who is now a Freshman at Arizona State. Just sayin' - all things else being equal.

You guys just want to ***** about Sumlin and so you make **** up. Just be real with your arguments and stop making **** up like a little *****.
THIS.

Kyle Allen demonstrated time and again that he could not handle adversity. You want to be an NFL QB? Then show that you can compete, especially when the chips are down. I'm not saying Sumlin and Spav couldn't have done better, but Kyle demonstrated time and again that, even injured, he thought he was better than Murray. Maybe he was, but leadership means supporting the whole team and not pouting on the sideline when you get benched for under performing. He may be good in the future, but right now he is physically and mentally nowhere near NFL quality.

Have been to ALL games for the last 3-4 years. Was really looking forward to this year as a breakout year. I rated Kyle as top qb, with Kyle in 3rd place. I believed that next year would be better, but now have my doubts. I concur that coaching on the offensive side was lacking, and our defense kept us in most games this year. However, we need to see some dramatic changes in the OR arena if we are to succeed.
Already purchased my tickets for the Bowl Game and we will be there supporting our Aggies. But, please do something about our offensive schemes if you expect to enjoy the support of our fans.

Things don't look good right now, but we have been in worse situations before. Trust the 12th Man to be there when needed. Good Luck, Kyle, wherever you go. Good luck Kyler as you step into the breach. And above all, folks, don't forget we are discussing 18-19 year olds facing tremendous pressures in College Football. Can you remember how you fared when you were the same age?

Gig'em, Aggies! BTHO Louisville!

P/S: Sumlin, get your act together..... quickly!

Making way too much of this. All this means is that Spav is gone, we are getting a new OC, and Sumlin decided our offense is going to be based around a very mobile QB (Murray and Martell). All of those are good things IMO. This is about what wins best in college. I don't give a hoot about developing NFL QB's. I saw nothing to tell me that KA is going to win consistently in the SECW, or play on Sunday for that matter.

So many, so obsessed assigning blame you can't even see the writing on the wall. This is a smart move for Kyle's NFL future and was most certainly with Sumlin's direction/input.

THE WRITING ON THE WALL
Kyle is injured, the best and absolute recovery is paramount. Kyle has, and still has to play at the most highest level in college football. First heal, then full rehab...Spring practice comes too fast to reprogram the accuracy required to jump into a fierce competition with Kyler setting that bar really really high. Uncertainty, is a risk to Kyle's future.

With a transfer... a year off for healing, babes and studying. Sad choice, but a wise choice with certainty. He will be back on the field and it will be insane.

Yup, hindsight is 20/20 for you Monday morning quarterbacks and coaches. Let's not burn down Kyle Field just because Sumlin's psychic injured teenager diagnostic radar signals got crossed. History repeats itself...Sherman held off way too long with the Tannehill QB decision.

I feared the longer we kept spav around the more damage it would cause, I did not see this coming, but we handed the "other" programs a grenade that between now and February they can toss on us as much as they like. Is Sumlin pulling another Chief on us? Would love to believe that, but following the LSU loss and now this, it gives us even more stress. Boy how quickly the Johnny Football days have evaporated. Think about it, we should have a NC under our belt, an SEC title, all the while kicking tu while they are down. The mighty and infallible tu is ranked 5th in Big12 recruiting rankings, 49th in the country, and we are letting them crawl back into the game with our constant screw ups and choking.
