Texas A&M opens up starting quarterback job for competition

On Tuesday during Texas A&M Football's weekly press conference, Kevin Sumlin announced he has opened up competition for the Aggies' starting quarterback job leading up to this weekend's SEC game against South Carolina.

All three quarterbacks — sophomores Kyle Allen and Jake Hubenak and true freshman Kyler Murray — were informed on Monday that they'll compete for the starting job with a QB1 being named and taking the reins later in the week.

Allen started the Aggies' first seven games, passing for 1,625 yards and 14 touchdowns with six interceptions. However, he threw three pick-sixes in a loss to Alabama and followed it up with a 12-of-34, 88-yard performance against Ole Miss during which he went 0-for-13 in the pivotal third quarter.

Hubenak replaced Allen in the fourth quarter of the loss in Oxford and went 6-of-11 for 46 yards in relief. He previously saw action in the Ball State game in Week 2, completing his only pass attempt for 14 yards.

Murray has completed 17 of 31 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions in spot duty this season. He's also rushed for 92 yards on 18 carries.

"You all three are going to compete this week"....this is how you bench your starting qb softly and save him face.

So, it's not an open competition each and every week???
Very telling....very telling, indeed....

Because changing the quarterback will fix everything. Has nothing to do with an incompetent OC. Maybe he should have said I'm opening up the OC position for competition this week.

****ing 2014 all over again. Sumlin is clueless at managing the team.

Psst, got a secret for you. Any coach that says there's an open competition for the starting QB job every week is feeding you a bunch of horse****. Good coaches don't do that during the season, really really bad ones do.

At this level, if guys think they don't have to compete for their jobs each and every practice, you get exactly what we're getting...

If Allen's shoulder has been hurt as we've been led to believe, he probably shouldn't be playing and risking further injury. If the other two can't beat out an injured Allen, I don't have much hope for their future.

It shouldn't be. Consistency is key and you have to let your designated best guy work through the normal ups and downs. If you go stagnant 2 quarters at a time much less 6+ then you bring in your #2 guy or even the #3. One of the things that had impressed me about Kyle was how well he responded when he was put back into games agter Kyler.

I just don't like the pattern we have of qb's doing great initially and then tanking. I almost feel as if we cannot gove up on Kyle because i don't think its him at this point.

I respect the way this was handled according to how Sumlin handles his competitions, but I think it would saved a lot of face by simply admitting that Kyle is injured and that he is going to sit out a few weeks. I saw on him campus earlier today and he was visibly sad and dejected.

Make no mistake, this battle seems to be between Kyler and Jake...I would absolutely not be surprised to see Jake start on Saturday...

So when do the Ags get competitive every year with Bama and LSU?

There is a problem inherent with having a one week battle for QB. It is impossible. The whole year has to be taken into consideration because they can ony prepare one QB to get ready for the game per week. There is not enough time or snaps in three days of practice to truly evaluate three qb's. Therefore it is a little misleading to think they are going to decide on one weeks work who the starter will be.
