Texas A&M opens up starting quarterback job for competition
On Tuesday during Texas A&M Football's weekly press conference, Kevin Sumlin announced he has opened up competition for the Aggies' starting quarterback job leading up to this weekend's SEC game against South Carolina.
All three quarterbacks — sophomores Kyle Allen and Jake Hubenak and true freshman Kyler Murray — were informed on Monday that they'll compete for the starting job with a QB1 being named and taking the reins later in the week.
Allen started the Aggies' first seven games, passing for 1,625 yards and 14 touchdowns with six interceptions. However, he threw three pick-sixes in a loss to Alabama and followed it up with a 12-of-34, 88-yard performance against Ole Miss during which he went 0-for-13 in the pivotal third quarter.
Hubenak replaced Allen in the fourth quarter of the loss in Oxford and went 6-of-11 for 46 yards in relief. He previously saw action in the Ball State game in Week 2, completing his only pass attempt for 14 yards.
Murray has completed 17 of 31 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions in spot duty this season. He's also rushed for 92 yards on 18 carries.
