Texas A&M Track & Field
NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships running thread
Texas A&M is sending 28 athletes to Eugene, Oregon to compete in the 2015 NCAA Track & Field Championships, which begin Wednesday morning. The Texas Aggies have a total of 30 entries in 21 events; four of the 28 competitors will be defending their individual championships from last year in addition to the women defending their 2014 team title. The Ags are also fighting to claim consecutive titles in the women’s 4x100 relay and men’s 4x400 relay.
With extended TV coverage being added this year, the meet will be organized with the men competing on Wednesday and Friday and the women competing Thursday and Saturday.
Deon Lendore, 2014 Bowerman winner, 2015 SEC Champion, 2012 Olympian and 2014 & 2015 SEC Runner of the Year (the credentials go on) will be defending his 2015 NCAA 400-meter title this weekend. In 35 years only three athletes have won back to back 400-meter championships. Lendore will also be anchoring in the 4x400 relay and 4x100 relay.
Senior sprinter Kamaria Brown is set to defend two NCAA titles. Brown set a personal record in the NCAA prelims two weeks ago in the 200 meter dash and will also be part of the women’s 4x100 relay. In addition to the 200 and 4x100, Brown will be a part of the women’s 4x400 relay.
Sophomore Shamier Little has produced an undefeated 2015 season, setting her up perfectly to defend her 400-meter hurdle title. Little was just the second Aggie track & field athlete to win this event, pretty impressive for a freshman athlete.
Also undefeated this season, Shelbi Vaughan will defend her discus title. If successful, Vaughan will be the first thrower to win consecutive titles since 2000. Although winning is nothing new to Vaughan, she was the first Aggie to win a discus championship ever with her 196-11 mark last year.
He may not be defending any NCAA titles this weekend, but Ioannis Kyriazis is expected to be a top performer in the javelin after being awarded SEC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. Kyriazis has already defeated the defending champion in one attempt at the NCAA West prelims and also claimed the SEC title this year.
Other athletes competing for A&M track & field this week include Shavez Hart (100m, 200m), Josh Hernandez (800m), Greg Coleman (400 Hurdles), Latario Collie (Triple Jump), Olabanji Asekun (Triple Jump), Chase Wolfle (Pole Vault), Audie Wyatt (Pole Vault), Devin Bogert (Javelin) and Dalton Rowan (Discus) on the men’s side.
