Get to Know... A&M guard Jordan Green

On his last home game at Reed Arena…

“It was wonderful. It was big time. A lot of our fans showed up, especially the Reed Rowdies that came out strong as always. It was bittersweet knowing that it was the last time, but it was really cool to just get out there another time and throw the ball up and play with my brothers.”

On his cousin Danny Green being a mentor to him throughout college…

“Not necessarily when I was making a decision on where to play, but when I got into college I started to communicate with him more. When I was here, he was still in Cleveland playing with the Cavaliers but when he moved down to San Antonio we got a lot closer because we were both in Texas.”

On being the first basketball player from Flower Mound to sign to a Division I school…

“Yeah, it was really cool. Our school was about ten years old at the time so it was a fairly new school but still had some sort of a rich tradition of basketball. A lot of guys went to smaller schools but it was just cool because no one really thought I could do it and everyone wanted me to transfer to a bigger school, but I said I wanted to stay with my friends and still be successful. So it was a great honor, it was really cool and whenever I go back I get a lot of love.”

On why he chose to come to A&M…

“Reed Arena, I mean look at this place, it’s amazing and the facilities we have like the practice gym. The people were what really sold me. I got to meet some of our academic staff, obviously got to build relationships with some of the coaches and then some of the players who were already there and they did a great job recruiting me. Some of my friends who are in the NBA right now like Khris Middleton and Donald Sloan, those guys took me under their wing the first time I came here which was when I was a sophomore in high school.”

On his relationship with Coach Kennedy…

“It has been pretty close. Coach Kennedy and I share the same faith values so we are on one accord with that and then in basketball it’s a mentor-mentee relationship. I try to learn as much as I can from him about the philosophies of the game and then just about how to be a man. He’s really taught me a lot about patience and perseverance. He is so strong, going on each day with what he has in his personal life and he’s shown a lot of strength in his life so I try to piggy back on how he lives his life everyday and our relationship has been pretty close."

On his relationship with Kourtney Roberson…

“Kourtney and I share a lot of memories. He’s one of my best friends for life and I’ll always call him up. He’s almost like a big brother to me. When I was trying to decide if I still wanted to come to A&M because of the coaching change, he was the one to say; ‘hey we are still going to have the same team, just a different coach.’ He really swayed me into staying and he’s just been a really good friend.”

On being a leader of this team…

"In high school it’s something that isn’t taught as much but when I got to school I had to learn about the intensity and the little things. Obviously we know we are going to play harder than high school and against more athletes, but there’s more intensity with making a cut, or setting a screen or making a pass with a certain hand and just the pace of things. So what I try to teach is just there are things you have to pay more attention to than you used to have to. You have to learn how to play almost all over again at a different pace and just learn the fundamentals of the game.”

On his memories from volunteering in the community…

“There have been so many, it has just been an honor to do all of them and to reach out to the community. I love going to Bryan and College Station, it is just a wonderful area with hundreds of nice people. I think my fondest memory is speaking at Still Creek Ranch at their basketball banquet this past summer. They wanted me to be a keynote speaker and I was like; ‘I’m 21 years old, I don’t know if I can be a keynote speaker at a prestigious banquet.’ They received me and I think I did well and left a lasting impression. Some of those same kids come up to me after the games. I think it was their third annual sports banquet and I was able to speak. It was really cool and I really felt honored. It was the first time outside of speech class, which I really didn’t do good in, but I actually did a good job at speaking without the pressure and without the rubrics and all that stuff. It was fun just to be myself and teach lessons that I have learned over my life.”

On his future after basketball is over…

“I don’t necessarily know the ins and outs of what I will be doing but I know that I am getting married in September which I am excited about to my wonderful fiancée. Then, hopefully finding somewhere where I can make some money maybe playing basketball, maybe doing something else but I’m not too sure. I think I will figure that out after the season is over because I’m really just focusing on the season. I have done some things to work me into having some connections with making the next decisions in my life. I would just love to work with a company that allows me to express my passion for basketball."
