Baton Rouge radio host Jordy Culotta talks Chavis rumors

“Last night, Les Miles tried to 'fix this' was the term I was told by my source, with the team still in Nashville. Miles and the administration tried to get with Chief and come to terms on something they could put something in his face that he would be happy with. I was told that from Chief’s perspective and body language, it was a may be too late type of conversation for Miles and his staff.”

 

“He did not fly back with the team and I would imagine he is in Knoxville, where he spends his offseason and where his home is. Still some things to think about, but from what I’ve been told, A&M is still in the drivers seat and LSU will be on the outside looking in when Chief makes his final decision.”

 

“The more I dug, the fourth year on the contract was big but it was more about the language of the contract. The more I found out, the dollar amount was not that big of a deal. LSU has 1.3 million on the table, A&M has 1.7 without the state income tax, but at this point Chief is saying he is pretty comfortable financially. The thing that aggravated Chief and his camp was the language in the contract that tied John Chavis and Les Miles.

You look at guys that have signed extensions with LSU, all the language in those contracts has terms of Les Miles and his ability to be around in two years. Kevin Mawae, a two time NFL PA President, said, 'If I’m reading that contract, I’m not signing it.' I think that is where Chavis was with the language of the contract. If Miles took another job or was terminated, Chavis and rest of the assistant’s salaries would cut off in less than a month. That really annoyed Chavis.”

 

“Chief is a worker, a grinder. His light is usually on at one or two in the morning. His wife and kids are in Knoxville, he rents an apartment in Baton Rouge during the season and that is kind of how he rolls. During the season he is a pretty unapproachable figure. I remember during that 2011 season, when they were beating the hell out of everybody, he was still walking up and down the halls like they hadn’t beaten anybody all year. That is just who he is, he loves the game and loves his guys, so he isn’t going to give you a lot of information to start off with.”

 

“This throws the dagger across the state line and says, 'let’s play ball' from A&M's standpoint. Everybody wants to accept the rivalry over here but the result on the field has given LSU a ho hum shoulder shrub over here. Speedy Noil threw a little spice in the pot, but now coming over and grabbing what is probably LSU’s best X’s and O’s coach does more. When he was hired in 2009, it was seen as a job saving hire for Les Miles. Overnight, LSU’s defense was back to the days of Muschamp and Saban.”

 

“One thing developing in this story that is something to watch, is that defensive line coach Brick Haley might be included in the deal too. If that is the fact, you are talking about one of the most dominant recruiters on staff. If you take Haley and Chavis, wow, you have crippled the defensive side of the ball of LSU’s football team.”
