What's cooking in the softball kitchen?
Looks like the Maroon team is trading in their gloves for oven mitts this week after losing the annual Maroon and White series. The series is a battle over who's cooking the holiday team dinner, the winners relax while the losing team prepares the meal.
The White team came out with an overall 2-1 win for the second year in a row and will be enjoying a holiday dinner prepared by the Maroon team.
Game one ended in a victory for the White team with a final score of 5-4. The first and second innings went quickly for both teams. The third inning concluded with a run made by Suzanne White for the White team. A solo home run made by April Ryan at the top of the fifth inning then tied up the game. The top of the seventh is when things went in the Maroon team's favor with a solo home run by Breanna Dozier and Ashley Walters which sent one runner home. A tied game in the bottom of the seventh with runs from Suzanne White, Cali Lanphear and a home-run from freshman Tori Vidales. The catcher, Celeana Massey, knocked one out of the park for the game winning home run. Game one ended in a victory for the White team 5-4.
Game two was a quick one for both teams ending in a victory for the Maroon team. The first and top of the second inning went quickly with no runs for either team. In the bottom of the second the Maroon team stepped up scoring three runs by Alex Masek, Erica Russell and Ryan. The bottom of the third also went in the Maroon team's favor, but not for the new pitcher for the White team, senior Sara Mireles. Mireles gave up four runs in the inning, which ended in a 7-0 lead for the Maroon team, on a home run by Ryan which sent the three runners home. Yet another successful inning for the Maroon team which ended in a run rule 9-0 final with a home run from Dozier which sent one runner home. It was a successful game for the pitcher of the Maroon team, Lauren Ainsley, who threw a no hitter.
With a tied series at the beginning of the third game the White team triumphed over the Maroon with a final score of 5-4. A home run at the top of the first inning from Ryan led things off for the Maroon team. The game was all tied up in the bottom of the first with a run made by Russell. A rainy top of the third inning went in the Maroon teams favor with a solo home run made again by Ryan, her fourth one of the series. The White team stepped up in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 4-2 lead with a home run by White. A hopeful Maroon team scored one run in the top of the fifth, but couldn’t come back after the White team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh with a home run by Russell and a score from Rebar.
The Aggies worked hard for a perfect fall ball record of 8-0. The spring season will start on February 6th in Los Angeles with the SoCal Classic.
