Rick Stansbury hired as final basketball assistant

May 7, 2014

Rick Stansbury — the former head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs — visited Billy Kennedy in College Station on Friday last week to interview for the final assistant coaching spot on the Texas A&M basketball staff.

On Wednesday, it became official: Stansbury will be hired to fill the position.

Stansbury, who decided to retire from coaching in 2012, has remained prominent around the college basketball world and kept track of everything that has occurred throughout the past two seasons. While he chose to end his career to enter 'the next stage of his life,' he hasn't forgotten everything he knows about college basketball since that time.

During his years leading the program from 1998 to 2012, Mississippi State won more games than any SEC program not named Kentucky of Florida. In fact, during his tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs, Stansbury went 293-166.

But that's just conference play jargon. What about the postseason?

Stansbury won a number of conference games, but he also made it a habit to extend his team's play into Spring Break. In 14 years as head coach, Stansbury's teams made trips to the postseason 11 times — six NCAA Tournament appearances and five visits to the NIT. Included among those are the four SEC tournament final games he led the Bulldogs to, two of which he won.

Stansbury is a really good coach and player developer. He can flat coach up wings and bigs - Miss St was usually a physical team with good rebounding.

When Stansbury left Miss St, so did Rodney Hood.

wac was joking about a coach in waiting. Seriously, we could do a lot worse.

Yeah, why the hell would we create a succession plan for a terrible coach?

That's like saying a Southwest 737 has more power than a piper cub.

Strange for both parties. **Is a better coach then Kennedy.***

If this is some klind of "succession' plan deliberately being put into place, someone deserves a lot of credit.

Rick Stansbury is an excellent head coach. His overall record is fantastic. He would be a great head basketball coach for the Aggies. It will be interesting to watch this all play out. He is a better coach than BK. What is the current thinking "??

BK steps down mid-season with a golden parachute due to illness. Stansbury gets a leg up as a BMA value temp hire, with potential option at year end.

If I had not heard parody-like interview responses from EH over the last 2 months, I'd never buy into such a scenario. Who the freak knows.

Yeah, I am not sure this board would be good at managing expectations. Which in hyman's own words is his main job function.

But most of the posters on this board could do nothing, which seems to be hyman's actual job function.

Won't believe anything until mallen pipes in from the AD's office. Do mallen have board, Facebook or twitter? If not monthly news letter?

I am actually pretty impressed by this hire. Way better than I thought we would get. He had some really good bigs at Miss. St.

Austin Peay? The NCAA must have been really mad at Kentucky, UCLA, or UNC that day.

I doubt Stansbury has been the plan for more than a couple of weeks.

I think Stansbury takes the job for the same reason I thought Roman Banks would. Our coaching situation is precarious, with a good chance for the need of an interim HC this season.

Stansbury is probably confident enough in his abilities to think he has a good chance to gain the permanent job.

It doesn't if BK still runs the show but if we wise up and can him midseason, having a guy like Stansbury take over could be a big deal.

Stansbury has been in the plan for at least a month...he was seen with BK here in CS on April 13th...not sure how that fits into the conspiracy theories being thrown around, I'll leave that to the authors of said conspiracies.

Outstanding hire! Looking forward to next season!

quote:
Taking over the helm as the Bulldogs head coach in 1998, Stansbury led his team to post-season tournament play eleven times in fourteen seasons (six NCAA and five NIT tournaments), with five consecutive post-season tournament appearances, the first MSU basketball coach in history to accomplish this feat. His 2001-02 MSU team compiled the most wins in a single season in school history (27). Also achieved the highest National Ranking in school history 2003-04, #2 in the country (finished 26-4). Stansbury also owns MSU's record for consecutive 20-win seasons with four from 2001–05 and again from 2006-10.[5]

Stansbury won more SEC Championships in the last 10 years than any other SEC program except Kentucky.

Link?

And we would better off with Stansbury as HC than BK.

There is not a conspiracy to it. Stansbury is the superior coach.

No link, he was seen and identified on April 13th by a very reliable source here in CS with BK. Presumably, there were at least a few phone conversations before the in person interview.

Conspiracy theories being talk of a succession plan being in place, or Hyman having something to do with the hire, ect...

Who is the source? You'll have to do better than that because I have a reliable source who says this only came together in the last couple of weeks.

I remember a "very reliable" source who swore Mark Richt was in town interviewing to replace Mike Sherman, when later it was shown that Richt was at a charity dinner (that source just got a job at TexAgs this week!)

I also remember the "very reliable" sources that saw Steve Spurrier in town to replace Slocum. And "very reliable" sources that said Gillispie just bought his mom a house in B/CS and wasn't leaving for Kentucky. And "very reliable" sources that said Jamie Dixon had called to ask about the job after Gillispie left

No your sources is mistaken and should probably get their eyes checked.

Stansbury took the job because there is a good chance he could take over much sooner rather than later.

Hyman approved it because hey, he doesn't give a **** anyway.

It is also not a coincidence they announced it right after we had yet another transfer in losing our leading scorer, according to my source.

It is a great hire and they program needed something to happen that didn't further kill the fanbase.

The hire is good move because now people will follow the team hoping BK is fired or has to take leave, and Stansbury takes over.

So what you're saying is Kennedy was not seen at a gas station on Sunday morning April 13th at around 9:00 AM paying for the gas of one Rick Stansbury in his personal vehicle with MS plates?...and it's just a coincidence that 4 weeks later he's hired as our new assistant coach?

You guys are funny...out of curiosity, what possible motivation would I have about lying about something like this? I'm not the one trying to sell a conspiracy theory. He was in town on April 13th, that much I'm 100% confident in, use that info how you will, I'm sorry if that doesn't fit nicely with your theory

so again, he drove his own car 1200 miles round trip to interview for a job 1 month before being hired, and you claim that you saw BK personally pump Stansbury's gas?

right, you tried to give details that you thought would give your story credibility, but those details actually served to blow up your story. remember to be less specific when lying/trolling on the internet next time.

Because everyone likes to troll from time to time on texags.

Yours is a pretty good one though. I saw BK pumping Stansbury's gas in CS a month ago but I am just now sharing it now.

I stick by mine because it is actually more believable. Now if you had said you saw them in a restaurant, that would be better.
