Tough Loss for Aggie Volleyball against #7 Michigan
COLLEGE STATION, TX – After overcoming #16 Florida State on Thursday evening, the Texas A&M volleyball team looked to improve their TAMU Invitational record to 3-0, by knocking off the seventh ranked Michigan Wolverines. However, despite the great effort given by setter, Allie Sawatzky, and the Aggies, they fell two points short of achieving that goal.
This statement alone cannot accurately depict the heart and hustle given by A&M tonight. Sawatzky had a career night, posting 16 kills, 16 digs, 38 assists, 3 blocks, and finished the night with a hit percentage of .571. Every time a major play took place involving a swing in momentum, a determined Sawatzky always seemed to play a role, whether it was by setting up one of OH Angela Lowak’s 12 kills or attacking the net herself.
Redshirt freshman, MB Jazzmin Babers, racked up 11 blocks against the Wolverines, while freshman S Kaysie Shebeneck served as the spirit of the team as she effectively used every timeout to motivate her team with yells and chants.
The point being here is not to spill stat after stat; it’s to show that a young Texas A&M team competed against a top ten team in the country, and competed with a great deal of excellence.
A&M forced the final set, after losing two straight, to make one last run at closing out against the Wolverines. The momentum seemed to favor the Aggies throughout the set, until the score evened at 13-13. After the final timeout was taken, Michigan had the lead with only one point remaining, and within a matter of seconds Michigan had survived the would-be-upset against A&M.
Despite losing to the top ranked Michigan Wolverines, the Aggies come away from the TAMU Invitational knowing this: they have the heart and determination to make a run at any team in the nation.
